Emil Cioran has been brought up many times here, but I only found the following and titled quote a few times and seemingly without much discussion: "It is not worth the bother of killing yourself, since you always kill yourself too late." How does that quote make you feel, viscerally? Do you agree or disagree?

I like it, it has some relation, perhaps, with the fact that once you plan to kill yourself, you have left your other "youserlf" behind and therefore, you are already dead?

I disagree prima facie. Why is it too late? As long as there's suffering in my future I can't see why it's too late. But additionally, I partly want to ctb out of protest for insults of the past. So it's not entirely relevant what lies ahead necessarily, it's about my current feelings about things.

Well, the old bastard died at 85 from natural causes, so his belief that killing oneself isn't worth the bother was certainly genuine :haha:

Cioran's premise is correct, but he draws the wrong conclusion.
It is true that you will always kills yourself too late.
By the time you have reached a point where you prepare your suicide, things have escalated; had you killed yourself before, the escalation and the suffering associated with it would have been avoided.
The conclusion is bizarre.
Let us say that you are an adult who has never had the pleasure of learning to play a musical instrument, and you now want to make up for this negligence by learning the violin. It is a fact that at every point of time in your adult life it will be too late to learn the violin, since one should have started while being a child to achieve anything close to technical mastery. However, no one would draw the conclusion that it would be futile to start learning it at all; in fact, everyone would encourage you to start as soon as possible!
The same may be said about suicide.

I guess you can only want to die once you've already felt suffering - because beforehand why would you want to leave?

If anything it tells me I should hurry up and CTB as soon as possible before it gets worse

I do not agree with it, but understand the position of it and can relate to the quote. I have thought about taking my life for many years, and at one point came very close to doing the act. There is always that one thought which tries to convince you to hold out just a while longer, because something great might happen - maybe. Except nothing does come along, and you look back at the amount of time you have waited and think: "I should have just killed myself as originally planned."

I don't agree with this. Just because it's too late for me to avoid the suffering that has driven me to this despair, it is absolutely possible to knowingly put an end to my life so that I can avoid new sufferings or a repeat of the old. The only time it is "too late" is when you die of natural causes; obviously you cannot kill yourself once you are already dead.

Since you always kill yoùrself too late, the real bother is to be born in the first place. There's no way to avoid suffering after that. The glass is either empty or full to a degree. To want to avoid future suffering is the same as wanting to live further, but more happily.

Cioran was an incorrigible optimist.

I get what the quote suggests, everyone kills themselves too late as life is pretty much basically all suffering, it would have been better never to have been born in the first place. However it is worth the bother to stop further suffering in the future, even know we have already suffered a lot, suicide prevents more from happening.

Then it's never worth running to the bathroom to shitpeepuke, either. You waited too long and now have to run to the bathroom, you should instead piss your pants, shit and cum all at once in your parents' living room.

Not sure I understand. Does that mean no one kills themselves too early? If I kill myself in the beginning of a long horrible time, how is that too late? If anything, what I seem to learn from that statement is that you should die as soon as possible.

It doesn't matter. Once you're gone you're gone. Unless you believe there is a conscious residue of despair or something but I doubt he means that.

Cioran's premise is correct, but he draws the wrong conclusion.
Logic has nothing to do with it. "Killing yourself is worth the bother although you always kill yourself too late" doesn't sound blasé enough. The man made a living by selling his books to Parisians
Then it's never worth running to the bathroom to shitpeepuke, either. You waited too long and now have to run to the bathroom, you should instead piss your pants, shit and cum all at once in your parents' living room.
You're a vile boy. Associating a noble, nutritious fluid like cum with piss & shit is despicable
