Someone in another thread posted about controlling parents, and being stuck with them. I too have experiences similar to theirs, over controlling, manipulation, narcissism, things I'd say are tantamount to abuse. I've always read online that a therapist is the most recommended course of action after getting out of such a situation, that said, I'm very suspicious of psychology, and I've often read of it doing more harm than good. Granted my own cynicism, whenever I've read stories of psychological abuse I've always had the thought in the back of my mind "They'll never be right again after that, nothing can fix that, they'll probably end up offing themselves."
My question is, is it possible to recover from psychological trauma, with or without the aid of a therapist? What is the likelihood of recovery?
