Someone in another thread posted about controlling parents, and being stuck with them. I too have experiences similar to theirs, over controlling, manipulation, narcissism, things I'd say are tantamount to abuse. I've always read online that a therapist is the most recommended course of action after getting out of such a situation, that said, I'm very suspicious of psychology, and I've often read of it doing more harm than good. Granted my own cynicism, whenever I've read stories of psychological abuse I've always had the thought in the back of my mind "They'll never be right again after that, nothing can fix that, they'll probably end up offing themselves."

My question is, is it possible to recover from psychological trauma, with or without the aid of a therapist? What is the likelihood of recovery?

I have psychological complex stuff inside me that I can't describe to anyone and I don't think its possible for me to overcome because there are more factors than me. But I think everyone is different, some can overcome and some can't depending on circumstances, environment, situation.. etc

Also I don't believe in the psychology. It is always targeting the suffering person as "sick "or "ill" which can subliminally make people look at people with problems as inferior to them. People always look at depressed and other people with other problems as inferior to them and will dismiss anything they say. This stupid psychology always referring to the problem as a part of the person and never accusing the stupid world, the illogical life or the brutal systems we live in.

I think therapy can help sometimes but it's certainly no guarantee. It depends on your perspective really, if you think there's hope in the world, happily ever afters, all that jazz, you can find things in life to help you get through all the shit, therapy can help with that. That's why so many people cling to religion and bullshit. If you're more of a realist or pessimist, it's damn hard to psycho-babble yourself into some sort of liveable life. Though it can be done.

Hi AnnonyBox,

Not sure if you're referring to me or the other poster in a similar situation. Either way the posters above me both gave good answers.

For me I've been dealing with lookism related bullying all my life. My parents have always been in denial that the reason I'm targeted is because I'm unusual looking (by society's standards) and instead they blame the symptoms. It's either because I look nervous, or I don't trust anyone because I was bullied as a kid, which they didn't do anything about anyway. I guess what I'm getting at is I was born with that and other issues, so I always thought their behavior didn't matter anyway and wasn't planning on being alive this long.

As far as my parents go, having professional confirmation the past year that their behavior isn't normal has at least made it easier for me to feel less anxious about the whole thing.

Psychedelics can help heal from trauma if used with intent to heal from it.

It depends on what someone wishes to heal from. In my case, the only healing available is death. For sexual abuse victims (which I am, but that is hardly why I wish for death), healing is most of the time something they can never reach. For many other issues, healing is a possibility, why not? The question that remains is whether it is worth the effort or not. Life sucks in general. You heal from something, but eventually you are shot down again by other humans. It is a matter of time. Suffering is the only constant.

I think you will heal. I think it's a long journey but you'll get there. How old are you? If you don't mind me asking. I'd love to chat some more with you. Don't give up on us just yet - and more importantly, yourself. X

Suicidal ideation changes you forever, making healing impossible. Once that door is opened, it can never be closed again.

Even if someone doesn't heal, I don't think that means they can't have a good / happy / meaningful / enjoyable / etc. life. All sorts of people live well with all sorts of impairments, psychological and otherwise.

But are they living or merely existing? Quality, not quantity, is the key here. By all accounts, my life should be happy and joyful but it isn't. Money has little to do with it; I have $$$$. At the same time, I have no intention of scrambling for a seat on the lifeboats. When the ship, if you will, sinks, then I am out of here.

Dont bother psychology and this kind of stuff dude. Only and only physical aspect of life is relief for psychological problems

This right here. My therapist told me that she thinks it's very unlikely I will ever completely 'heal' from the emotional trauma of my childhood and adolescence. There's just too much stuff that happened (or, well, actually too little). She did say however that it is possible to learn to live with it and not have it form an insurmountable obstacle for your life.

I'm with what most people here said: Everyone is different and for everyone therapy works differently. My two pence? If your other option is death, then it sounds to me like you've got nothing to lose so why not give it a shot? Death is always going to be there as a Plan B in case it fails. I think the bigger problem would be finding a good therapist.
