Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

People of older ages think phones made us suicidal, they didn't, internet only showed us how fucked up the world is, and we couldn't handle it...

I thought about this the other day. The truth is, consuming too much of media content at a young age is not good for the developing brain.

I think it's equally the worry that so much is online now. The worry that younger generations are losing social skills because they don't socialise in person necessarily. I managed to be shit socially without the internet to be fair. I'm old. It didn't exist everywhere when I was young.

Plus, in my day, the bullying stopped in the playground. I do think social media can be bad for that. The anonymity of it makes some people particularly vicious. Being compared so much with others everywhere I think likely isn't great either. I quit social media a while back and, feel so much better for it.

I think there are good and bad elements to it. I doubt it's the main cause for so much depression but for some, it might be. You're right though. I think it's simply lazy to blame it for everything.

Apparently too much dopamine is not a good thing. Especially short content videos like Tiktok. If your brain gets addicted to that stuff and then you need to go to class and listen to a boring lecture for one hour, you can't do it. This is what I heard in an Andrew Huberman podcast.

Internet and stuff just, kind of made anything more accessible, both good and bad

its all modern lies made to scare you off the internet, just like how parents used to tell their kids being on their screens to much could cause blindless

Might be true, doesn't change the fact the life itself is a nightmare at its core

the best and worst thing about the internet (and the increased accessibility that smartphones provide) is that it connects us to nearly everything happening in our world -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. it's harder to live in blissful ignorance now... though many manage to. the rest are rightfully distressed and overwhelmed. or numb to it all.

this quote by jiddu krishnamurti comes to mind:
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

Computers and cell phones have at least helped me socialize virtually, something that's impossible for me in real life. They are a valuable tool in modern times; you can connect with others this way and feel less isolated.

I miss the days of getting tired of bullying so I would shove my knuckles straight in their mouth after I snapped. Instant karma was the best. Just not for my school record nor public relations...

Social media definitely made dealing with consequences non-existent though. Anonymity only enables people more. I've never really been an avid social media user and I'm pretty glad about it in retrospect.

Like that Mike Tyson quote:

"Social media made y'all too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it."

Yeah, some of the extreme examples have been horrific. Bullying resulting in suicide. Even nasty shits cheering the person on, catfishing, sexual exploitation. There's plenty of extremely dark stuff.

Obviously, that's the minority. I watched a documentary once that basically said the internet and social media hit before anyone had really worked out how to keep it safe. Even now, parents seem clueless!

I find that weird. Like- you know your vulnerable child will have access to the internet from a really young age yet, you neglect to find out what dangers that could expose them to. You just maybe rely on tech companies maybe.

It's like the school saying they're going to take the children on some close up animal experience at the zoo. Might be guinea pigs and goats. Might be crocodiles and lions- they haven't confirmed yet.

I'd be either a neurotic quivering wreck of a parent, petrified they were being groomed or bullied or, I'd be so restrictive, the poor things would hate me. I just don't get how any parent can be sure their child is safe. Nah, it's better mine stayed unborn.

I actually love the internet for me. I don't know what I'd do with myself without it but- it certainly makes me wonder how it will change us. Not always for the better I suspect. Like everything else, I expect it will have mixed results.

AI will be the next big one I suppose. Will anyone even bother to be creative? Will they have any respect for copyright and intellectual property rights at all? The lines are bluring so much where they likely won't even consider that it's theft! Just copy and paste because you like it.

If we don't respect people's contributions to society- their ideas, inventions, creativity. If it can all just be plagarised without having to pay them, or even credit them, will we lose more respect in one another generally?

Will uniqueness matter? Not over money. We'll replicate and bastardize everything but, it won't even matter if there is still demmand for it. People's morals (including mine) often go out the window if they can get what they think they need cheaper.

I saw this brilliant comment under an interview with Sir Elton John about the threat of AI on the music industry. The person was like- offer AI our MP's jobs! They'll begin to care then...

I wonder if that could happen. I wonder if it will. An AI prime minister. 😆🤖 Here's the budget, here's all the problems. WTF do we do?
