intelligence is the biggest mistake of evolution

humanity has the ability to ponder: why? how? when? self reflection, purpose…

humanity has the greatest potential to collapse, or eradicate life on earth

my theory about evolution of life is that nature reinvents itself, in a quest to make progress, in a quest to defeat death. through iterations and experiments, nature gives rise to more chances, hoping to win against death

dinosaurs dominated the earth for 200 millions years (humans - 0.3 million) (!!!)
they could have continued for 1 billion years uninterrupted - no obvious signs of self extinction
nature erased their domination through a simple asteroid - why? because there was no progress; no way to defeat death without more progress, and it made room for humanity

the main problem: intelligence

through knowledge, humanity became far more advanced than dinosaurs (in terms of progress)
but because of intelligence, humanity will have the same result as the asteroid - a complete reboot
intelligence is the downfall of humanity

next iteration will probably be more successful (similar to the matrix iterations)
however, entropy will always win: everything dies, eventually

Really interesting and I do agree with you. Perhaps not on an individual basis but as a species- we have evolved to thrive and take over- as I expect any animal would given the chance. (I'm not so convinced that many living things do seek to maintain equilibrium with their environment. I'm more of the opinion that natural checks of disease and being eaten by other animals keep them from taking over.)

I think ironically though- if individual long life was the goal- nature would have been better off keeping us more simple. Apparently, the only species that is considered 'bilogically immortal' is a species of jellyfish. Wonder how long it will be till we manage to kill it off though.

Like you said though- intelligence has enabled us to take over and even given us a work around to death- eternal life in a religious context. We surely reign supreme in telling ourselves how important we are that even mortality can't touch us.

I have wondered that myself- if it is the more intelligent of our species who are plagued by the deepest depressions. People like Stephen Fry are SO intelligent yet suffer so much.

As a side note- I always wondered why we don't have animals as big as dinosaurs wandering about now. Apparently, it's because the climate back then was much warmer with much more CO2. Do you suppose- what with how we've fucked up the planet, we could one day see a return of giant creatures?!! Probably not 'we' though- expect we'll be extinct by then... and good riddance to us.
