Instagram influencer Lee MacMillan has died. According to a post on her Instagram page, "lifewithlee," the Canadian social media star died by suicide after a battle with depression. She was 28 years old.

MacMillan's Instagram page, which documented her traveling tales in Australia with her ex-boyfriend, Max, and their dog in a van, has over 61,000 followers. According to local news station KEYT-TV in Santa Barbara, California, on Monday, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office identified MacMillan as the woman that was hit and killed by a train last week near Santa Barbara. According to the report, she was previously reported missing, and police feared she may have been suicidal.

A heartbreaking post on her page Tuesday said she took her own life on Friday.

"She was the brightest light, a magnetic force of nature and was loved by so so many," the post reads. "If we can do one thing for Lee now, in the midst of this soul-crushing loss, it's to spread the message that mental health is just as real as physical health, and that illness can strike anyone, no matter how unlikely they may seem. It's ok to not be ok, it's ok to ask for help, it's absolutely necessary to ask for help."

"Lee was an advocate for mental health," the post continues. "She was candid and open about her own struggles. She was receiving help: from professionals, from family, from friends. She had support around her. She was not alone, she was not trying to fight this alone. And yet she still succumbed to this terrible illness. It is more nuanced than we can, or do, appreciate or understand."

The post encouraged her followers to not get caught up on appearances online.

"Life is more complex than a single social media post," the post reads. "Things are complicated. Don't believe what you see online. Get out into the world and talk to your loved ones. Check in. Ask them genuinely how they're doing. Be available to help. To listen. To offer help. Remove the stigma of asking for help. Let's spread the awareness of this issue, for Lee and every one else who needs to hear this: #speakupforlee. And hold your loved ones tight. Tell them you love them. Because life can change in an instant. We will miss her with every fiber of our hearts."

She died by train. It's a shame that people are so desperate that they resort to such a violent and horrible method. If only she had known about this site then she at least could have had a more peaceful death.

Are you the same person who thought that a gunshot to the head was "undignified" and that there was no evidence of it being painless?

No. As long as you use a powerful enough gun like a shotgun with buckshot it should be a quick and painless, albeit messy, death.

But killing yourself by train is always a stupid way to kill yourself, and you'll harm innocent bystanders too.

My dads cousin jumped in front of a train about 10 years ago or so. I understand the desperation.. if timed and done properly the impact would cause instant death but I would just feel so awful for the train driver and any passengers who had to witness it.. my conscience would never allow me to go that way. The guilt would hold me back.

C'mom whom here never felt like throwing yourself in front of a train (speed high speed train). Me, in many times, in many circumstances :aw:. She is (was) a person like us.

I almost did in the middle of psychosis, I can understand the desperation. If that railing wasn't behind me that I held onto
to stop and ground myself I'd be gone.

She was a person, a person suffering just like many of us. I can't imagine the pain she was going through to choose the train but I hope she's at peace now.

I think many suicidal people have felt like throwing themselves in front of a train, jumping off a cliff, etc at some point in act of desperation. She is no longer here, the act was just in a more public way.

I use to watch their videos on YouTube as the dog was very similar to a dog I use to have.

She has talked about her depression. Suicidal.

This is her last video from last month for anyone interested.

RIP LEE

Smiles from social media or even in real life does not mean genuine happiness. I am like this too, and most of our fellow members here on SS. We try to hide our sorrow, so that it wouldn't raise concern to our loved ones. I'm heartbroken that a beautiful human being, both inside and out, has succumbed into depression. Though she was famous and popular, this does not mean she is different from us. She is like us in many ways that have resulted her to CTB.

Lee MacMillan, RIP.

Ditto. Been sectioned for being on train tracks and platforms with such driven thoughts . Didn't have capacity at time but that is the reason why needed to come here to access method less traumatising . Friend was jury member coroner's court. Train case. Severely impacted his MH because of what required to witness.

Poor woman. If someone were to stumble onto her insta without knowing the full story they'd just see a young woman living her best life traveling the world with her boyfriend. Not someone desperately searching for new reasons/places to stay alive.

Although I'm not in favor of the method she chose I hope she's at peace now.

Sorry to hear about the sectioning, but maybe it was for the best, at least for the safety of the people who would've been involved or witness. As you said with your friend, it can really impact people's mental health, that's why I don't think I could do it publicly. Even hanging in the woods, I would feel bad for the person, probably an innocent person walking their dog, who would discover me. I've been considering charcoal burning for a while, but I may join the majority and try hanging instead - both I would do alone at home with the doors locked and notes at the entrance to not try entering and to call emergency services to retrieve my body instead. The less people involved the better in my opinion.

Trains are easily accessible method with high lethality,

I'm not going to buy guns from black market, I don't have money for it. I don't even know how they work.

I would just purchase N from there if I wanted to buy something. The risks are the same anyway.

However I know where trains are passing at high speed.

I can't feel anything so why would I feel for some bystanders.

I have been having similar thoughts,I know of a place in the middle of nowhere where I could lay my neck on the tracks and let the train take my head off. No bystanders and I could probably hide myself well enough that even the driver wouldnt see me.

There are lots reasons why we can't feel anything as world narrows down. I understand that. It was never on my radar as means when 'stable' probably because have been witness to severe violence trauma and knew at some level it impacted and as was the way then I buried feelings and thoughts. So would mess up others. And friend's account confirmed .

I dont know how to minimise the trauma of who finds me except to leave notes in the right places if am together enough to do so. 2 family members ended their lives young and extremely violently and having to identify, not being able to view in chapel of rest or have open coffin as is the cultural expectation , really messed up family and friends up. Forever. So dont want to be driven down that road again and reason life has to end pretty soon is can't cope anymore with the terrors and overwhelming fear that comes with my MH deterioration. Dont want to risk same thing happening and it will if I dont take action now.
