I haven't slept normally in over a year.
I cant sleep untill 3-5 am every night no matter how early i wake up. And even if i manage to fall asleep, i wake up every 30mins- 2 hours.

I have this feeling of dread every time i try to go to sleep. This fear and sadness translates into this immense chest pain. I tried melatonin, & this other OTC pill that has Diphenhydramine. None of them work. Idk if this is considered insomnia… or if i can have insomnia at 20 years old.

Im in dental school so going to my lectures with only 2-4 hours of sleep is making me fail almost every course.

You probably won't be prescribed benzos if you say you want them for sleep. You should say that anxiety is making you fail your dental school courses and that it's also keeping you up all night.

It's horrible how often humans struggle to even find some kind of rest through sleep, it's just further proof that this world truly is hell. But anyway I hope that if possible you find some relief from what you are going through.

cannabis can help insomnia a lot if it's safe for you (ie doesn't give you anxiety/paranoia and no schizophrenia, psychosis etc in the family).

some people find cbd also helps though I have only tried thc.

Lunesta has been helpful for me this past year. I used to take Ambien but it seemed to wear off and I'd wake up after 4-5 hours. My prescriber had me do that GeneSight test and apparently I probably metabolize Ambien rapidly. Neat.

I wonder if it's easier to get a non benzo hypnotic? I've never actually been prescribed benzos before. I've been given trazodone, low dose Seroquel, and some other off label crap for insomnia in the past with limited success. At least my current prescriber gives me shit actually meant for sleep.

As far as getting a script I'm just honest about it. No sleep is a major trigger for me, I'm not safe to drive with just 2 hours of shitty sleep, I can't afford to lose my job, and YES I've done all the sleep hygiene things so PILLS now please. I just make sure I take it a minimum of 8 hours before I have to go somewhere. I'm lucky that I usually fall asleep and wake up in the same position and haven't done the Ambien Walrus thing.

I've dealt with insomnia for years, started during law school. Tried so many different things - natural and Rx - but no relief. A couple years ago, I was prescribed Gabapentin for nerve pain, and it ended up helping my insomnia immensely. 300mg before bed and I get more sleep than ever before. Highly recommend trying, and easier to get a Rx compared to benzos.

Correct. Say you have extreme anxiety. Horrible nightmares. Feel like a heart attack is coming.

But benzos are a life saver for sleep. But they won't prescribe it for sleep anymore.

Good sleep has become, and I don't mean this as a pun, just a dream. Something to aspire to but that never happens.

Lack of sleep can absolutely destroy a person especially as it pertains to mental health conditions. Everything from depression to ADHD symptoms can become dramatically pronounced. Haven't been sleeping well at all for the past day and it's hell. Can't imagine what prolonged insomnia can do to you.

What has helped me in the past was doing small dopamine fasts, so avoiding screens, bright light, stimulants or anything of the sort a few hours before sleep. It may sound a bit cliche but sometimes it help not to get wound up by new pieces of information or not have to wake up around the time caffeine crash kicks in.

I can totally relate and sympathise with you on this. I have mild insomnia, especially when my anxiety is peaked (quite a lot of the time). I sometimes get a break from my anxiety/depression/OCD, but it's lackluster. It's debilitating and added to the mix I also have bowel problems. 🙄
