I know that my relatives (abusive assholes) will want to invade my privacy and use my stuff, but since I can't destroy everything, at least I will get rid of those things.

There's a nice hammer in the kitchen.

I will be attempting to do the same.
Part of my preparations are the destruction and removal of private matters which will only serve to humiliate me or be woefully misinterpreted and twisted.
I don't think any of my family members have that much interest in me (or the truth) regardless, but better safe than sorry.
(Although I guess you can't be sorry when you're dead lol, but people can certainly continue to make a mockery of your memory.)

My relatives still make fun of people who have been dead for a long time, and the mockery usually starts the same day the person died.

Unbelievable, how horrible!
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, if there are people who bully others to death then I suppose it's not much of a stretch to bully them in death as well.
I understand not wanting to make someone a saint just because they died, but to outright make fun of them? Awful, your relatives sound like they need their teeth knocked out.

Factory reset will do fine as well, and you still have the chance to use/sell the devices if you decide otherwise. Im sorry you have to endure these toxic people

Just take out the hard drive. Because you can smash the laptop, and still not destroy that. And unless you did full disk encryption, the data can be accessed.

For the hard drive, if you have a drill, just drill a couple holes in it. Otherwise hammer will do fine.

Regarding the phone - I wonder if putting it in the microwave would destroy it...

I'll drop mine into acid that I (had to) order with SN heh, just for fun. I'd give it a shower otherwise. I feel you on the nosy family, mine cross the lines while I'm alive, they'd really have a go if I left it

okay im tech stupid so please bear with me - how do you remove the hard drive? i'd like to leave the rest of my laptop for my family to use or sell, but not go through my stuff.

doing a factory reset on my phone and removing the chip thingy - idk how to call it - that should be enough and leave it usable for others, right?

Find a disassembly video for your laptop model on youtube to take the hard drive out. Some models you just have to pop off the bottom cover while others hide it fairly deep. (I have to go through quite some screws on one of my HP laptops)

And yes, if it's a recent android you will also have to remove your account before factory resetting or they will be stuck during setup. Don't know about iphones but they might have something similar.
thank you. my phone is lg6 - what do you mean by account? gmail - i've got several of those

Yeah sorry my info was outdated (you had that quote open this entire time? :blarg: ) Starting with android 5.1 they added Factory Reset Protection but my last interaction with a lollipop phone was a while ago, and I recall having to remove my account before resetting, but this is apparently not the case anymore on more recent versions. (As long as you do it through the phone settings)

And with account I just mean the account you used when you set up the phone when you first got it.

Most likely, yes. I'm finding conflicting information about the FRP but I am 99% sure with your phone having android 9, you won't have to remove your account from your device, provided that you factory reset it through the phone settings.
