I am a felon, living in Texas. Under Texas law, I've found out that five years after my discharge, I am legally allowed to purchase and own firearms again. But federal law still says that I can't apparently, so I'm a bit confused over what the process will be like. Will I be able to just buy one online or in Walmart like anybody else once my five years comes up? Or will the federal law issue make it more difficult still? I appreciate any help provided.

First of all, I don't live in the US or close to it, so sadly I can't give any specific advice. Now what I would recommend you is to ask a lawyer or see what happens after the 5 years (in case it's close)

Perhaps this article will help. Consulting with a lawyer in your state will give you much more concrete answers than anyone on this forum can provide.

In any case, I'm pretty sure felons can buy black powder guns anyway.

The answer I seem to be forming based on everything I read is that I can possess, but not purchase, firearms once five years have fully passed. In Texas, though, private sellers (either through a person-to-person sale or a gun show, from the sound of it) aren't required to run a background check on the person they are selling to (unless they have "reason to believe" they are selling to felon or someone they shouldn't). It is what people are referring to as the "gun show loophole". So that sounds like how I'll need to proceed, but my official five years isn't up until September 2024 anyways.
