It was difficult to add in the title really- obviously, a spoiler alert...

In the film: 'Passengers' the main character awakens from space sleep 90 years too early after the ship is hit by an asteroid and malfunctions. After a year alone, he decides to wake up another passenger for company. Probably not uncoincidentally, a female he finds really attractive.

In the same situation- firstly- would you be tempted to wake anyone else up? Or, would you have a great time exploring the space ship on your own? Would you try to jail break any of the facilities? The ship offers varying class accomodation. Do you think you'd crave the company of others? There is an android barman to chat to. Do you suppose you'd actually wake someone up for company? Either crew or passengers?

I'm fairly isolated in this life although, not entirely by any means. I have this feeling that I would be ok alone but then, I've not really known what it's like to be entirely alone. I hope I wouldn't wake up either passenger or crew though- unless the ship was actually in danger.

I reckon I'd jail break what I could in terms of luxury travel though. If I wasn't travelling higher class, I'd see it that they owed me that for waking me up too soon.

How about you? Would having a huge luxury space ship to yourself feel like a dream or a nightmare?

the film was great,
it is certainly a comfortable life,
you dont have to be afraid of losing your job,
you will never be homeless,
you will always have enough food,
being alone for a long time would be the worst thing for me,
an adroid cannot replace a human
I would definitely have had to wake someone up

I saw the movie. I don't blame his decision. Spending 90 years alone is just impossible. And I guess he's not even going to live that long because he's like already 30, so he's gonna die in maybe 50 years?

I'm afraid I'd do the same. I'd grab some pots and pans and start banging away.

The luxury and the cool tech is nice too. I'd like to spend some time in a place like that for sure.

Yeah- it looked ideal to me too. Although, that's also because I'm tired of the pressure of sustaining life, working etc. It sounds far more enjoyable to live in a floating hotel with all my needs met till I die.

For them though- they both had ambitions for a new life on another planet. I imagine it could be crushing to know that wasn't now going to happen.

Do you really think you could wake someone though? It would be dooming them to a life they didn't choose and depriving them of the life they hoped for.

Yeah, true. Maybe I'm kidding myself that I would be ok. It's not like you could communicate with anyone in real time.

God, this is my dream life. Floating through the stars ona luxury cruiser with no human interaction. I think the only thing that would bother me is the constant apprehension that something would go wrong and I would not know how to fix the systems. I crave a life where I do not have to have human interaction and am left to my own devices, so this movie would be ideal for me.

Also has a very good soundtrack.

It was a really clever film. Thinking about it- imagine if all of the crew had woken up 90 years too soon? The passengers would also have been fairly screwed then.

Yeah, it feels like a paradise to me too. I loved that swimming pool. Imagine having that to yourself?

Still, it's difficult to imagine having no live human interaction at all. No internet. No Sasu! Or- only posts that would appear in 10 years or something. I don't know really. I still kind of think I could be ok but, it's hard to really know.

I agree, the soundtrack was really good too. I do love a good movie soundtrack. It's one of my top genres to listen to now. They make life feel more epic.

I've thought about this in a few recycled apocalypse scenario movies or TV episodes where there is a single person left on earth. People sometimes mention how it would be terrible because there are no new things being created. However, currently right now, there is more media out there than a human could ever consume in several lifetimes, let alone one. Even if no new TV shows or movies or books came out today, you would still have an almost infinite selection to choose from and could really never get through anything before you died. Even video games are the same way (looking at you, my obnoxiously large Steam library).

I cannot imagine the Avalon traveling with any less than a significant portion of human history and media to keep the current occupants entertained when they arrive at wherever. Even if you woke up 90 years early, you would still have probably enough entertainment for the rest of your life.

I've had that thought too but then- without people maintaing infrastructure- would all these things necessarily work? Obviously, a lot now is run by computers I imagine. On a spaceship especially- with the crew in hybernation too- a lot would be automated. But then, what if stuff does go wrong? I wonder how long the power/ water supply would stay on on earth if all but one person died. I doubt it would be long before they would have to start fending for themselves. I suppose we'd just go out looting what we could.
