I was able to find SN easily, and that makes me think it's not it

Hello.

Reading this forum I have come across many comments saying how hard it is to find and buy SN, how you have to go on very specific websites to find it, buy it from shady people and how websites are starting to remove it. However, I was able to find SN very easily on the biggest auction site in my country. There were many options available of different purity, going up to 99%. It was also very cheap, at around 2,5 euro for 500g. These factors are making me scared that this might not really it. Any thoughts on this?

Not sure. I just bought 2 pounds of it from somewhere in the us 99$ purity is what it says. Guess I will just have to test it when it comes. It better be it

Are you sure it is sodium nitrite not nitrate? Nitrate is available everywhere but nitrite isn't

Otherwise, search the forums for others who have supplied pics of their SN. Should be white and powdery, not too clumpy. Last, always do the blood test at least. Aquarium test recommended too.

If the blood turns brown / darker when mixed with SN it in theory proves it's SN. Aquarium test better for determining exact purity afaik but it's more complicated

E**y banned the sale of sodium nitrite across the platform. The head of e**y (UK) even got involved after it was proven that the sale of SN was directly linked to some suicides.

The UK vendor (who was unaware what it was being used for) turned his customer list over the to the police and anyone who bought from him before ~Feb 2020 received a police visit to see what they were buying for. There were daily posts from members saying that they had received their police visit and panic posts from people who were still anticipating theirs. Many members became homemade beef jerky enthusiasts.

It's not impossible that you bought + 96% pure NaNO2​ on there because it's possible to disguise the listing but it's unlikely. The listing would be quickly reported and taken down and the seller account banned.

Edit: apologies, you're in Europe and you can still buy it on auction sites (that aren't e**y) there. So you probably do have legit SN.

Yup, that's the site I ordered it from. I believe they do, but we shall see.

It is not that hard to find at all, just because you can't find it on the first page of a google search does not mean it is difficult to find. I think people here often over-exaggerate, N is an entirely different subject, but SN is still easy to buy be you in America or Europe.

"Curing salt" can have other compounds mixed in. It's not usually pure or anywhere near pure SN. Unless it gives a specific percentage of SN, I would not trust it.

just read the labels. it should say that the product is at least 95% sodium nitrite. the closer to 100%, the better. the better ones are >99% pure.

don't use it for CTB if it's not at least 95% pure sodium nitrite.

sodium nitrite = NaNO2

I've seen "curing salts" that are 94% sodium chloride (NaCl) and 6% sodium nitrite (NaNO2), these are unsuitable.

also remember that it's nitrite, not nitrate.
