My family won't help me pay the money back
I don't have the money to pay the government back
I'm not going to live very long
I'm going to neglect myself till the dark thoughts push me over the edge

Frauds are bad people. The world is better off without me

the government also steals from people. it goes both ways. the government isn't honest either

this is the fucking problem with people when it comes to trying to follow rules and laws. rules and laws aren't everything and they can and should be bent a lot of the time (even not followed at all).

if you needed food stamps for food, you needed food stamps for food. this isn't something you should be shaming yourself for. this kind of system is broken and requires for people to find other ways to obtain benefits. benefits that should be provided in the first place by default because people have basic/essential needs to be alive.

I feel bad

I started on benefits because I aged off my dad's insurance. I didn't qualify the first time cause I was living at home and my dad was taking care of me

I then left to live on campus and a co worker told me about emergency food stamps. I put down that I wasn't getting financial support from my dad (lie) and needed resources. I also have a lot of money saved from my moms passing but chose to not touch the money (as I'm not working and don't have income)

The food stamps and cash assistance, and Medicaid, left me feel independent while taking the burden off relying on my dad

But now that its time to recertify, the government may likely tell me they want me to pay back the money

Especially since the found out about the money I have saved

I fucked up

Your family's money is not your money and should not be considered for YOUR benefits. If your dad isn't claiming you as a dependent on taxes, then legally speaking he is not financially helping you.
Plus, it's not the government's money, it's the taxpayers' money, and you fall into the category of taxpayers and are therefore entitled to these benefits as you need them

Man fuck the government. These are the same people that are screwing over millions of people everyday, just for their own schemes, spending it on their own toys and the most unimportant shit imaginable. They've done so much worse with money than you ever could.

I've been "stealing" benefit money and allowances for years, I don't give a shit. Why should you feel bad about stealing from an organisation that doesn't care about its poor, disabled, homeless or minorities? The government only cares if you've gone over your limits of savings or whatever cause they're greedy and want it for themselves.

Don't feel bad about lying to those dickheads when they lie and cheat everybody in the country who isn't rich, white and famous.

Food stamps come out to about $6.16 a day. For reference my per diem for traveling for work is $74 a day for food. How long were you on food stamps for?

If I were in your shoes, I would say I made a mistake (which is true) on the form and want to give the money back. If it is a lot, I would suggest trying to negotiate a monthly payback plan. It may have some interest, but it would give you time to get yourself in a better financial situation.

Mistakes like this happen all the time. I owed the IRS some money and they wanted to work with me. They will likely be more than happy to work with you.

I'm a big believer of not lying on government documents. If you get caught you will get screwed. I would just be honest and say it was a mistake. You don't have to give details, they would just be happy that you were honest with them lol.

Edit: are you unemployed? Many states say you are qualified for food stamps based on income level, not cash in the bank.

Is everything else going okay with you?

The government allocates a tiny tiny amount for poor and disabled people, and when others lie and make fake claims, it's not like the government just takes that hit and says no problem, we'll cover it. They take it out on the people who have been honest on their forms, by adding many more layers of difficulty and red tape, requiring more proof and forms even from people who have never lied, and even lowering benefits for everybody.

Yes, the government SHOULD absolutely provide the basics for everyone, but we know that's not the reality we live in. We know they don't care and they use every opportunity to put less money into benefits for poor and disabled people.

No, I don't think anyone should be badly beating themselves up or feeling like CTB for lying, but nor should they be at the other extreme of laughing and bragging about how they lie and get "free money" (I've encountered plenty of those people) when there's disabled and impoverished people who don't get nearly as much as them, and don't find it a joke when they can't get enough food for the month.

If you have enough to get the basics like food, the kinds of things that you wouldn't feel okay telling someone to their face they should go without, don't contribute to them going without by knowingly lying on forms and claiming benefits you don't qualify for.

Don't feel bad about exploited this corrupt system. That's how people survive, it's extremely hard to win if you play by all the rules.

Hi all. Thanks for the informed responses

I'm afraid I've taken 5 steps back on my breaking journey based on how I handled this. I chose to dissociate heavily last night, feel suicidal, and distanced myself from friends

Now I have to do damage control (sigh). I'm also on the phone with the Food Stamps people. I'm going to explain my situation honestly and see what they tell me

I'm glad you reached out to them.

It's a good reaction to be scared of owing the government money. That being said, they are people and usually understand. People do not go into the government for money (there are some notable exceptions, and those usually make the news).

I hope it works out for you.

I live on the poverty line in a council house, without this money I'd be screwed, obviously not as much as anyone else since I live with other people. Of course I'd still okay without it, but I might as well save up and go big until they find out, and then ctb. Technically I've not even lied to them, just not diagnosed and don't plan to be, that's why I put stealing in quotation marks. It's true, but I'll never be able to work so this is the easiest way to get money.

Probably not the best mindset to have, but I honestly can't bring myself to care, none of these people are real anyways.

When I read the title of the thread, I was expecting to read a story about some hundread thousands of dollars or in the millions of dollars, worth of fraud committed by a master con artist or politican against the government who just had free access to all the government money and somehow pocketed it all. Considering what I was expecting to read, this doesn't sound that bad or too severe. I don't think you'd go to jail over food stamps or Medicaid. They will most likely be understanding of your situation and your reasons. If they do ask you to pay them back, they will work out some sort of payment plan that's managable and reasonable so that you'd be able to pay it down over time without crippling you too much financially I assume. It probably feels awful right now and you are clearly regretting what you did, but don't be so harsh on yourself.
