Of course I would like to go to heaven, but I've reached a point that it doesn't matter anymore as long as I'm no longer here.

Arguably if hell was actually a thing wouldn't it be worse than being here, and for eternity?

Hell is a pretty outdated and illogical concept. If the Christian concept of hell is real, then by default pretty much all of us would be there (depending on how devout you are).

In the very slim chance that hell is a real place, though, I'd say that anything freeing me of the torture of living in this body and brain would still be better than being a human on earth. Earth is very much the true hell for many of us.

I just finished this book:

It's definitely worth reading if you were raised Christian and still have lingering fears of the image of hell from Christianty.
It shows how the concept of the afterlife changed dramatically over the period of time the bible was written.

For some of the people reading here, I think it can be of value to note there's no reason to take "Hell" and "Heaven" as literal biblical cannon. Every form of religion, or spirituality, has some concepts relating to the afterlife, be it incarnation, Heaven/Hell, Walhalla, Elysium, returning the the "Source conciousness", it doesn't matter what you call it.

Only in an atheistic mindset does the afterlife not matter. (Which is only a very recent development in human history)

So I stand with the OP:

Concideration of the consequences for CTB on the (potential) afterlife has at the very least some value.

It's also one of the last hurdles I'm struggling with myself, though I know noone will have to anwser. I'm working on getting to the point you're at; being able to say: fuck it, let's go. But out of all the 'spiritual' actions a man (or woman) can do, CTB is probably the most impactfull one.

If there is an afterlife, it's not that crazy to assume CTB might have an effect it..

Hell is a lie made to incite fear in us.
Religion has proved to be very effective at manipulating people.

I agree, I believe that some kind of afterlife is more likely than just nothingness (mainly from NDEs and other similar lines of evidence).
I imagine CTB does have some effect on what happens afterwards so trying to make as well informed a decision in this regard as I can.

I just started reading this one:

So far I'm impressed in that it is well written and authors seem to be fairly balanced in their approach, despite the rather woo-woo subject matter.

What did you learn from the last book you were reading?

What did you learn from the last book you were reading?

The Heaven and Hell book was interesting in that it was written by a biblical scholar who lost his faith over time. He got to Princeton theological seminary and started seeing evidence that the Bible wasn't the infallible word of God transmitted from on high, but a human work with errors, etc. The main thrust of the book is that the current Christian idea of of Heaven and Hell was a pretty late creation (first few centuries AD).

The authors of the Old Testament didn't imagine an afterlife with rewards or punishments immediately after death. They thought more of a resurrection of the physical body at the end of time, at which point the non-believers would be annihilated. Even this idea seemed to develop based on a misreading of passages that arguably refer to the nation of Israel itself being 'resurrected' and brought out of exile.

The book got me reading a bit more about scholarly textual analysis of various books of the Bible and it seems like some of them were written hundreds of years after they claimed to be, and sort of 'backdated' in order to appear prophetic or appear to be written by some famous Biblical figure.

I feel like if there is a hell, we're already in it. So unless there's a double hell, I think it'll be fine.

There is no heaven or hell....it is human construct. When you're dead, you're dead. The very most that will be left is residual energy.
