Funding for a big project I was working on was abruptly cut off today without warning. This was a project I was expecting to carry me through March of next year.

I have no idea what I'm going to do. I've failed my family so many times, this one is probably the most humiliating. Losing my job right before the holidays. I wish I had the courage to do what I know I need to do.

That's horrible :-( I'm really sorry this has happened right at one of the worst times :-( I doubt it's your fault by the sounds of it. I'm sure it's down to some dumb bean counter who should be fired. What line of work are you in if you don't mind me asking?

I'm in marketing. Usually I have a pretty diverse book of projects to avoid situations like this, but this project was really interesting to me so I allowed them to "buy me out" for a six month period. Now I'm left with nothing. I should have known better, and now my family will suffer because of it.

Ah man that's really unfair :-( But I doubt you made the decision without weighing it up. I would bet serious money that 99% of us would have done exactly the same. The bastards that pulled the funding are to blame. Can you take legal action? I'm sure there must be some sort of breech of contract here if they insisted on you clearing you books to accommodate them. You were likely thinking this would be good for your business and your family. I know it's kinda easy for me to say, but don't be so tough on yourself for doing what you thought was best!

Are there any "gig" projects you could maybe do for the time being until you get back up to speed?

I will just say something I said to someone here earlier. The thing about "bad decisions" is that they seem like good ones at the time. And I've made more than my fair share.

Same here. Work contract ended and won't be renewed. I am just using the meager savings I have left to stay afloat. There is no point to this anymore. I always knew that I was eventually going to ctb, it was just a matter of time. It is finally time to stop lying to myself. This is life and it won't get any better.

It really doesn't sound like you make a habit of "fucking up" to me. You sound like you have a successful business at least as a freelance guy. As another business man once said "everything boils down to half chances" it either works out or it doesn't. That was said by Steve Jobs! He ended up being pretty successful in the end!

I'm sure you are making every possible effort to resolve this, so don't loose heart! You can bounce back yet! :-)

There is no retirement for me. I will have to work until the day I die. What is the point of enduring this humiliating existence just to live another day? I don't want to end up old and bitter just because I didn't have the guts to kill myself sooner. Rotting into old age is a worse fate than dying.

You losing your job is NOT your fault. If the project was cut off you had no control over this. It will be hard over the holidays but the holidays are nothing more than a big push to spend your hard earned money. Just so long and you and your family are together for the holidays that's what's important. You'll find another job. Don't be so hard on yourself.

You can't blame YOU because the carpet was pulled. How is that failure ?. If I had a wife, I would want to understand my wife's mindset. Is she scared or in denial?.
