So, I'm one of those older millennial boomer types that haven't had much exposure to anime growing up (unless you count Pokemon).

I am pretty ignorant to anime in general, but so many here love it that I feel like I might be missing out on something great!

I'm interested in watching, but sincerely do not know where to start. I have perused some anime stores online, but just get overwhelmed, give up, and click off. I watched, like, one Naruto episode 10 years ago and that's it. Can I take recommendations for 1-2 that I can start off with? Prefer none that are too dark and traumatizing atm. Just want to tip my toe, so to speak.

Also, is there some underground website I can pirate this stuff so I don't have to pay? Asking for a friend on that part. 🙂

Not too dark or traumatizing?

Well there goes 90% of my recommendations..lol

What genres do you normally like when it comes to other mediums?

And yes you can absolutely pirate the shit out of most anime.
I'm not sure I remember any exact site names at the moment though.

Akira is a good place to start. After that Ghost in the shell. Spirited away is a lighter option

Definitely Dragon Ball Z Kai. The whole series is pretty easy to find on Google.

Yea the second is a good anime movie recommendation, though I know of people who find it to be a darker and more depressing Ghibli film (personally I disagree).

seriously tho JOJO's Bizzare Adventure is great, although I don't know if it would be the best place to start. I recommend Part 5 the most!!

As for the sites, try https://animixplay.to/ , I've definitely never been on there. ;)

I have never seen it and yet somehow I know all about Dio, and that we should realize it was HIM and not JOJO.

(Not the faintest idea as to what any of it means.)

yeah some jojo fans can be overwhelming and pervasive lol, but the anime/manga's good! Part 5, 6 and 7 are among the best pieces of fiction I've ever seen. Dio's the main villain of the show hh, pretty iconic character :D

Oh yea I didn't mean it in a bad way, I find it amusing lol, it reminds me of how in the days past, people who never saw a popular show would make posts where they would attempt to describe the characters and the plot lines just from the bits and pieces that crossed their path from rubbing shoulders with those who had seen and loved said shows..the results were hilarious.

Would you say that the content of the series is supposed to be taken seriously? Or no?
It just seems so humorous to me, Dramatic!

Given your age bracket, I would definitely agree with Akira and Ghost in the Shell (original one) as good movies to start.

If you are looking for a good series, try Neon Genesis Evangelion. It might strike you as a 'giant robots' anime at first glance but it's actually not, and trust me, its deep and good. Just make sure that you watch the movie End of Evangelion once you have finished the series.

There are plenty of good recommendations here but I think these are good entry level suggestions for your age.

While I appreciate DBZ and all that, please- if you are going to give Toriyama a chance, start with the original Dragon Ball from the 80's.

The tone of the series is definitely very over-the-top and "bizarre", which makes it quite memeable (in a good way). I'd say the main themes of jojo's are "fate" and existentialism, among other topics like hope and despair, humanity, power etc., which I find very moving and powerful!

I mean, I need more information. What are you into? Horror? Science-fiction? Social critique?

I watch it on animeflv.com, but I am 30yo which means I don't really watch much anime. Anime is obviously tailored to teenagers but some of it not too dumb and alright. Definitely very inferior to books but I degenerated and can't bring myself into that world anymore, and it alienated me intensely from the dumb-dumbs around too.

Fuck it, all the ones I liked, try them (grammar will be off):

Sinsekai Yori
Parasyte
Tokyo Ghoul (only the 1st season)
Dorohedoro
The 86th
Welcome to the NHK
Yakusoku No Neverland
Berserk, but the old series or movie, none of the new
Vinland Saga
Fumetsu no Anata
Spirited Away is a masterpiece, you have seen it, but let's include it for the sake of completeness

If you want just a toe in the water, try "Penguin Highway". It is light and easy, and since it is a movie it is over in one go, but if you like stuff with meaning, it leaves room for a lot of interpretation, like the better part of anime will.

If you are willing to watch more than one evening, I second Neon Genesis Evangelion. Make sure you watch the original show, though, they tried to put the same content into 3 or 4 movies later, and I think they failed.
