I have a full tank of pure argon (it's 20 cubic feet and well over 500 liters. At 15 liters per minute, that will be over 30 minutes of argon. That's more than enough time. Oxygen deprivation is supposed to cause brain death within 10 minutes).

I have the regulator. I originally got one that was cubic feet per hour, but some kind person on here pointed that out. So I got a new one today that was liters per minute. I also have duct tape, a turkey roast bag, a hose, and a full face snorkeling mask. Since the snorkel opening isn't round, what I'll do is put the hose end where the snorkel holes are. Then I'll wrap it around with turkey roast bags and use duct tape to hold it in place. That way, argon will go through the snorkel as opposed to oxygen. That probably didn't make a lot of sense, but I can share pictures later if anyone wants. My current plan is for Sunday. I'll have several hours to do it. In fact, I'll be home alone Friday afternoon through Sunday evening, but I have pets to take care of, so I'll do it Sunday a few hours before people arrive home. This will ensure I have enough time to ctb, but also that my pets get the care they deserve.

Also, it's an argon/CO2 regulator. This is kind of a dumb question, but the outer numbers are for the argon, right?

The numbers are for both CO2 and Ar.

The outer numbers on the pressure gauges are for bars, the inner numbers for psi.
The outer numbers on the flow gauge are for Lpm, the inner numbers for Cfh.

Sort of a metric/standard duality, depending on which scale you think in.

One question: how do you intend to purge the air from the snorkling mask? With a typical exit bag, you crumple up the bag to force out the air, then flood it with N2. You can't do that with a mask. Or do you even need to purge the air?

Thank you for all your help! I didn't think about purging the air, I'll have to take that into consideration. Although I know someone used this method with a full face scuba diving mask.

Depending on the design of the mask, it may be that with a high enough flow rate the incoming N2 purges the air/CO2 well enough that you don't trigger your hypercapnic alarm. My only concern would be that the reduction of ambient air/CO2 might use up a lot of N2, and that a 20cf cylinder might not have enough gas to get the job done.

BUT, that said, give it a try. If you end up overwhelmed by your hypercapnic alarm, you'll know pretty quickly and there won't be lasting harm done because you'll be pulling that mask off your face whether you want to or not. If your hypercapnic alarm doesn't trigger, but you find yourself taking more than a few minutes to black out, abort, refill the tank, and either figure out how to flush your mask or get rid of the mask and fall back on a simple exit bag.

Be aware that it can take longer to black out than the "one or two breaths" I've heard cited. A lot longer. That's why I've flinched several times now. It's undoubtedly due to me breathing fast and shallow, because my adrenaline spikes, but that doesn't change that it's a problem for me. I find myself panting away, fogging up the exit bag, and just about the time my hands get tingly and my head starts to get a bit swimmy I flinch. And that's after purging the eb of air, filling it with N2, hyperventilating, and exhaling deeply before pulling the N2-filled bag down over my face.

I'm sure it'll be a non-painful way to ctb, but the moments prior are no less stressful. It simply takes longer than my courage can currently endure.

Congrats on getting your supplies buddy. Were did you buy it if you don't mind me asking? You don't have to give out the name but was it some welding supply shop and did you have to use a credit card?

I'm hoping it will be enough. I'm sorry your attempts didn't work out. I'll try to hyperventilate to expel carbon dioxide, it might not work, but it's worth a try. The few breaths causing unconciousness did also sound too good to be true. I'm also hoping the Xanax will work. It will calm down my nerves and make me drowsy. Of course that won't help me overcome the survival instinct, but I'm hoping it will have some impact. Maybe I could fall asleep while the exit bag is working its magic... But of course the panic response would wake me up no matter how tired I am. Though I might try to take some strong sleeping medications. Thank you for the heads up on the potential problems and I hope that it works for you next time.

I got the argon from cyberweld.com, the hose from some online store and the full face snorkel mask from Walmart (but I had to order it), and the regulator from Harbor Freight Tools. There was a harbor freight tools store around so I was able to just go in there and get an argon regulator that was under $40 that was in liters per minute. It was nice because getting everything was probably less than $250.

And thank you the rest of you for your kind comments. @Schopenhauer, I know you are ctb this Saturday, I hope you find peace.

I looked at cyberweld a couple years ago from MaxDogBrewing. If I could just sneak that shit past my aunt I'd order it.

I don't think an Uber or any taxi company will let you carry cylinders of gas around here.

I'm sorry dude. :( I hope you're able to find a way around it and will let you know if I can think of anything.

How about take public transport to the store, make purchase and put cylinder in a suitcase and then get picked up by an uber a couple of blocks from the welding store?

That's not a bad idea at all. Isn't like they check our bags like they would at the airport. I could work with this. Thanks buddy.

Goodluck @Trashcan. Hope it goes well for you!

I'd be interested to see pics of your setup.. I think you mentioned it in the first post that you would if anyone was interested.

I plan on doing it too with argon and are keen to see how others are going about it. I need to learn more about regulators. What type of regulator did you buy?

Sorry for stupid question, but does"reductor"/"reducer" and "regulator" the same device ? I am a real potato at all this technical stuff, so I appreciate if somebody will make it clear for me.
