This is a conversation I had yesterday with my psychiatrist.

- So why don't you go to therapy?
- I was on multiple therapies. I don't believe in the idea that you have some suppressed emotions that linger forever till you relive them.
- There are different therapies, e.g. CBT.
- And are they proven to work on personality disorders?
- ... but that's all there is: medication and therapy
- Really? How about religion?
- Religion cannot change your views on the world
- Oh really?
- Therapists spend 5 years on certification, so they are qualified to help you
- Yes I know, my colleague from group therapy, has just been finishing his therapist certification. He is the most messed up person I know. This field attracts narcissists who love to feel superior to and in control of their patients.
- (now she began to be really pissed off) ... Therapy will let you see things in positive light
- Like I need to go to therapist to try to see things in positive light
- (with irony) so we will see how successful you will be by trying it yourself.
- (with genuine smile) I am still alive, that's a success.

After this, she just shut up and prescribed me meds I wanted.

I have been to many psychiatrists and psychologists. I was in a psychiatric hospital. in my opinion today science is not able to treat mental disorders. maybe this opinion is due to the fact that I live in Russia, and I came across unskilled specialists, I don't know how it is in the west. but from my own experience: psychology is empty talk, and psychiatry makes a person stupid. I was given a very controversial and vague diagnosis of F21, many people say it is given to a lot of people. I think in some cases religion or philosophy can really help people.

I have been in 3 psychiatric hospitals in Switzerland, and 3 in Poland, the only difference between eastern and western wards is that on west they pump you higher on meds and that conditions are nicer.

That's funny, LOL... I had my an appointment yesterday with a new psychiatrist, and my narcissist sister was with me. The "doctor" made me so mad when she refused to agree with my theory that my father could have had a mental illness. I gave the example of an incident where my father exploded & started to remove his pants, and threatened to pull out his penis, because he was tired of my sister's female friend coming to the house, he did this infront of me, my mother, and my sister's friend. He acted like a mental case when we would have friends come over sometimes, he didn't want us having friends, and definitely not on his property. My sister acknowledged the incident, but immediately tried to act like my father was normal because he worked a job for 35 years.

All the psychiatrist had to say was something like "I can't diagnose him, he's not here, but it's a possibility he had a mental illness," but instead once she saw that my sister didn't think my father was mentally ill, she was like "I can't diagnose him," "people act crazy without mental illness," because she was a coward that didn't want to disagree with my sister.

All this psychiatrist did was validate to me that she is a weak human that will forfeit common sense, and treat a patient like trash to please someone else. She also allowed my sister to gaslight me right infront her.

She prescribed me Zoloft and compared it prozac, which made me hesitant to take it. She then tells me that her children are on zoloft. Hmmmm... am I suprised that her children are on zoloft? No, who know's she probably is a narcissist that has misdiagnosed her own children. After I saw her character, who knows, that may be the case. She is only human, and humans are corrupt even if they are in the position of a doctor. All she did was make me want to CTB even more (at least I was smart enough to keep these thoughts from her).

I think I'm going to start recording all my sessions with these so called doctors because they are TRASH!

As someone who is currently in med school, I can confirm that I've seen a lot of weird power trippers and straight up abusive and aggressive people there. Some of those will probably go into psychiatry. Psychiatry is the best for these kinds of people because unlike other specialties, in psychiatry it's difficult to prove that thetreatment is wrong.
I'm sorry this happened to you. If I were you I'd really go alone from this point on or find a different therapist.

Unfortunately, I am hooked on mirtazapine, so I need a psychiatrist for prescriptions. I tried to wean off myself from it but failed miserably because insomnia hit me hard. After 3 months of enduring, I was this close to CTB, so I decided to came back on full dose.

@Why Me? Your father is the one paying your psychiatrist, so I wouldn't expect a psychiatrist taking your side sadly.

Thanks for your sympathy, and advice. My father died along time ago. I'm 41, my sister came with me, because I'm allowing her to take guardianship, and she is trying to use the mental health system to get me housing, so she came to this appointment so that she could enquire about resources. She is a terrible person that helped ruin my life along with the rest of my immediate family, but I have now totally given up on life, and ran out of options, and reached out to her for help out of desperation. I plan to CTB this summer, so in the meantime I'm just going along with the flow to see what happens...

Psychiatry is a waste of time. Been there, done that… been treated for mental illness for nearly 25 years now. All you'll get from it is condescension and abuse which certainly won't help. The whole field of psychiatry and psychology is long overdue for an overhaul. Anyone who goes into the field has a screw loose themselves and no sense of integrity or ethics. Do your own research, try and put the pieces together as to why your behaviors are the way they are. More often than not your current behaviors which are deemed as incompatible with societies expectations stem from early childhood development abuses or neglect. I empathize deeply with anyone going through mental illness, dis-ease of the mind is the most difficult to process and cope with. At least with physical ailments it's usually a bit more black and white.

By the way, like 7 years ago, after having 4 sessions with a psychiatrist, I was left devastated after the way I was treated. This man was a nut job, and acted like he was under the influence of something, or had lost his mind. I had to keep asking him if he had my correct file, because he was so lost. Anyway, I called my friend hysterically crying and he advised me to report him to the state. So I wrote a letter to the state about my experience with this psychiatrist, and I also included in the letter all of the negative online reviews that I found about him online, because clearly he had been horrible for years without consequence. To make a long story short, 30 days after I sent my letter they spied on his office, and inspected his files and reported everything to the court they forced him to appear in (I found the court papers online and read everything). They told the judge he was grossly negligent, and etc. They also kept my name hidden, and just said they "received some information around a certain date" mentioning the exact date on my letter so I knew they were referring to me. Anyway, they revoked his license to practice, and it took him 4 years to get it back ( I am absolutely shocked they allowed him to get his license back.)

My point is, if you have a bad experience with a doctor, report them to the proper authorities. You will probably just need to send them a letter, and they will keep you anonomous. These terrible, lazy medical professionals need to be punished & stopped! They keep going because no one reports them...

I actually had a good psychiatrist. Very Freudian and even looked like him lol. Basically was just nice to talk to someone that I couldn't predict what they would say as I can with friends/family. Then he retired. Haven't been to one since and trying to find a decent one now and be referred so I wouldn't be paying through the nose would be like winning the lottery jackpot several times consecutively.

I'm glad you were able to keep him from practicing, even if it was temporarily. I'm just too apathetic about the whole field to give a shit.
