I've been reluctant to get another animal because I often lose them over circumstantial reasons. I got to briefly pet sit a friend's cat for the last couple weeks right as I'm in the height of the withdrawal process from Adderall. She prevented relapse and me from falling apart mentally.

She is gone now for about second day and I'm noticing myself tumbling down fast. I didn't understand how much I benefited till she was gone. Today I almost posted an ad on Craigslist to find one immediately lol! I'm just afraid to ever be in a position to have to give it up or something. A cat has been more helpful than any psych drugs or therapy. No side effects and consistently around to offer support.

I don't know what I'd do without mine, honestly. We've got two of them, one that lives outside and one that lives in. Inside cat is my little baby, and truth be told the only reason I'm able to drag myself out of bed some days. Just the duty to take care of her and love her is enough to keep me going for a bit.

If you're in a spot where you're comfortable enough to take on that responsibility, then I'd say go for it. They are wonderful companions indeed. :)

Animals are wonderful and can be so theraputic. Yes a million times better than any psych drug! I have a dog who has helped me get past a lot of trauma and abuse I endured in my past relationship. I love cats as well (they are calmer lol). Animals just help to calm me down and they give so much love and support in return. There are so many cats that need a loving home.

Cats can be so therapeutic! I hope you do get one as long as you are capable of taking on the responsibility. It's clearly been beneficial for your well-being. :)

If I wasn't determined to CTB I would get a cat. I just wouldn't want to leave it behind when I finally CTB.

What places usually have the most abandoned cats? I will totally take them in even if they bite and scratch me.

Pets are a fantastic way to help with depression.
Pets provide unconditional love that is second only to what a child can provide.
A cat or a dog is the usual choice.
Most prefer one over the other, depending on the type of person you are.
Dogs are more work, but are also more dedicated to you, and interactive, more drama.
Cats are less work, more self sufficient, not as active, less drama.
There are pet adoption agencies everywhere in the world, where you can adopt a pet.
There is usually a fee involved to be sure you sincerely want a pet.
Sometimes that fee can be waived if you can show financial hardship.

At one time, I had six cats at the same time.
Sadly, only two remain now, both of which a 19 years old, but still in great shape.
I keep my cats always indoors, as there are too many dangers outside.

Cats are magic. I never understand why some people claim they're not affectionate. I've never met one who didn't respond to love from humans. The one I have now wants to cuddle all the time.

Aaaaw all those sweet cat words but mine is a true rebel (he was the ´black sheep´ of a litter of 5 - they didn´t want to play with him because of his clumsiness and he was the only tiger coloured) and I got him with 7 weeks. We honestly went through a lot together while he´s almost 3. He was the only one coming to me the time my eyes met the kitten family. Here´s pussycat (the name he grew into);

(srry video hardly worked)

I want to get one but cant because i rent and most places dont allow pets. During summer when cats tend to hang around outside their house i would walk past and pet them.

I don't know what I'd do without my kitty! Her name is Kenzi and I got her off Facebook on New Year's Day 2018. The lady I got her from said "get her today or I'm going to put her outside. She causes my husband gets watery eyes" so of course I got her as quick as I could. Only 7 weeks old with beautiful unique markings. Now she is a happy clumsy, in no way graceful but amazing none the less. Best choice I've ever made

Have you thought of a greyhound?
Very chilled, very cuddly and cued into you, and will require you to exercise 15 mins daily

Cats are cool, dogs can be a bit needy and frantic but it depends on where you get one. Rescue homes provide dogs that have had hard lives because they are so much more dependent on human interaction and a loving family.

Awe I just love them
Me too! Hope you can get one. One of the greatest pleasures in life.

He might have had a different daddy, that's possible in cats.
They all have distinct personalities, but they are all lovable in their own way.
I want a cat soooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad

Kenzie is my Granddaughter's name. She is a sweetheart, I'm sure your kitty is a sweetheart too.
They are all clumsy at 7 weeks. That's what makes them so cute and fun to watch.
Sometimes they try to pounce on something, and do a somersault, that is the funniest.
I'm sure you have made the best choice!
Have you thought of a greyhound?

A neighbor has two Greyhounds. Awesome dogs, and as you say, very chilled.
And yes, they will be taking YOU for a walk, several times a day!
'the more i see of people, the more i like my dog'
Yup, pets will love you unconditionally, and never stab you in the back.

I had no idea! That is interesting .... might then verrry well be the case (his hairs also stood up way more compared to the rest - as if he had a thick neck).

I'm debating between leaving the US again or staying long enough to adopt and care for a rat 'til he/she dies. Have you ever had a cat that's not affectionate? Did that bother you if so?

care for a rat
did you really mean a rat?
I have read that domesticated rats are extremely loving creatures, and make wonderful pets.
So that would certainly be an option.
But aren't they huge?
They are huge - so be prepared to buy lots of dog food! :)
BTW: I like your new Avatar. A black hole? Mind if I jump in?

They are, but
My 2 greyhounds combined are cheaper to feed than my cat
They need surprisingly little room. They are chilled chilled chilled.
The need fairly little exercise, a 15 to 20 mins walk twice a day is sufficient. They'll love more but that's up to you.
Your sofa may get a bit cramped if you let them up. Very soft and very affectionateaffectionate affectionate

I swear, cats are natural and very potent antidepressants!
There was a cat near my work place who'd jump on me and massage my belly. It was the best feeling in the world.
Some fucker ran him over, though. Pissed off an entire building filled with warehouse workers. Nobody knew who it was, he'd be murdered by either Russians or Arabs. Dunno who would torture him more.

Yes, I meant "rat." I've wanted a rat companion for years. They're very smart, affectionate animals. I also really like greyhounds and have wanted to rescue one since I was in school. But I don't think I'll be alive long enough to care for one.

@FTL.Wanderer according to Google, domestic rats live typically 2-3 years, some as long a 4.
Maybe fit your schedule?

Are you thinking of adopting? Where do you get your cats? If I can't muster the courage to use a gun soon, I may adopt a rat. In the two to three years the rat is with me, the Sarco Capsule may become a viable alternative. Hope you find a compatible animal companion soon.

I adopt. Every cat I've adopted has helped my quality of life. Cats give me a piece of happiness.
You could always adopt an older cat. They usually get adopted last and in most cases put down.
