I'm 29 years old and I've already had several jobs. I never liked the whole concept of having to work 5 days a week just to have two off. A very basic cost-benefit analysis shows this is totally not worth it. The rat race is very tiring, and an extremely small number of people get to do things they love for money.

I have never had a job that I enjoy, only a few that I have tolerated. And none of them really pay enough in late stage capitalism to get ahead on anything. You just constantly work and then you're stuck in debt and miserable anyway. The cost of basic Healthcare and housing here in the states is completely insane. And it's only getting worse.

Even if I weren't depressed, which I usually am, I feel that this would be enough reason alone to want out. In fact, this is why I don't agree with the whole "go to therapy" trope because therapy cannot undo capitalism. Depression can in fact, be a rational response to one's circumstances.

Yes, I just think that it's a fact that wanting suicide can certainly be a rational response to just being aware of this world and people who are in denial always label this as being a 'mental illness' as they are unable to come to terms with the fact that for many people this life is simply not worth enduring. There is nothing to be gained by suffering endlessly, just to deteriorate and die anyway, it's completely unnecessary having to exist. But I think that working is just being a slave to the society, no wonder so many people wish to die when they are trapped in tedious and unsatisfying jobs.

You're 110% Correct, I agree with everything you said.... I'm 38 and also have had numerous jobs, some were okay but I hated most of them just like the one I'm at now ( for approx. 9 yrs) The rat race is real and I hate damn near every second of it.

I've tried and tried to gain a different perspective ( I'm grateful to have a job, grateful to make some money, grateful...)but I just end up back at square 1. It's so fckn toxic I can't even begin to tell ya.

Thoughts and prayers to you, I get it.

Some people thrive at work. Not me. I'm incompetent. Without work I'm pretty useless and will eventually run out of money. Life on the sidelines is quite pointless and miserable. Escape is near impossible.

I'm 20 years old and completely baffled by the fact that people will live on this earth and work until they are 65 with no questions asked. Sounds like an absolute nightmare to me. I wish to die young to avoid that

Only part u got wrong is it isn't capitalism. We have never seen a free market anywhere because as long as u have a third party (the government) the market is distorted. This means that most of the wealth does not go to the people who do the hardest, most dangerous, most boring, most unpleasant jobs. If we did have free market capitalism, it would. We actually live under like a soft communism right now. U can still drive to another state, u can buy and sell without major restrictions, u still have some choices but it's anybody's guess as for how much longer. The ruling people want to make it so we are not free at all anymore. I hope this didn't depress anyone more than they already are if u are. If u are wealthy u might not notice any restrictions on your life because u can easily pay for your freedom. But the working class people are barely able to survive and have very little freedom. All the laws punish poorer people.

It's capitalism. The people who have all the money can hire cheap labor, and keep all the profit. Nothing communist about that. The government is bought and sold by lobbyists and donors- politicians serving whoever can pay them most.

100% relate. I have held I don't even know how many jobs. 50+ I'm so fucking jaded about employment now. Walked off my last job 2 months ago. Even when I landed my actual perfect dream job, I wondered how long I could keep it up. 5 months.

I've been placed in the highest position (over others) despite lack of experience and done the shittiest of the shit jobs. So much chemical exposure. I'm convinced I have neurological damage.

I love productivity. Work is good. Getting thing that needs to be done feels great.

Capitalism is the enemy of both productivity and health. I hope by the time my kids are my age the world has figured out that everyone having basic needs and cool toys is way more fun if no one's backs are stepped on.

I agree with this. I keep telling myself if I switch jobs I won't be so suicidal, but I think I'm just too incompetent and useless to work without it seriously damaging my mental health. I don't know how much longer I can go on like this.

99% of humans are slaves, most just dont see it.

If you cannot quit work right now and live your life without work, you are a slave. You may not have shackles and be controlled with a whip, but you are a slave.

1% of humans live in obscene luxury. They are the only ones truly free.

These beautiful and succinct posts about working and suicide spring from month to month and I always receive them like the reasonable stream of consciousness that they are.

Yes, work alone makes suicide rational for some.

The thought of being forced to work a menial job for some random corporation is so unappealing to me, I could never do it. I would much rather ctb than work for barely anything. I think my mood would plummet even worse than it is already and I'd feel more empty inside. It's unfair. I don't want to buy random shit marketed to me I just want to live in peace.

Not being able to have a good job is one of my greatest anxieties.
Also you are right about the horrible deal we have to accept. Imagine if we lived in the future when you have to work 2 days and rest for 5. Probably I'd think about ctbing more rarely.

Last sentence is extremely true. "Just look at it differently!" "Just try some breathing exercises" no, how about you (therapist) try looking around and paying attention once in a while?

Ever since I was a child I've always hated the idea of the 9-5 job and spent much of my life trying to avoid it. Unfortunately my attempts to free myself from the rat race have only made me poorer and damaged my relationships beyond repair. In the end I've had to settle for a regular job anyway. An exhausting job with long hours and poor pay considering my level of education. Ironically if I had just settled for a normal job in the first place I would of had a much better life. I just hated the idea of not being in control of how I spend my time.

You and me both friend. I've only had one job for 9 years now and it's one that's completely eroded my patience for people and life in general. Modern day capitalist jobs demands major workloads from single individuals for very long hours and extremely menial pay. Productivity of the many is meant to serve the few up top. Sure workers can strike but the government always subverts their efforts, look no further than the Rail Workers strike. It's a losing battle.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately, among other things. Everything is so expensive that I can barely afford the basic essentials even with assistance (which means that I'm luckier than most to even have assistance). I feel like all we as humans do is work just to never be able to make ends meet. How can people enjoy life when they're constantly struggling? I know I can't. It makes things so much more glum. I can't even get access to the doctors I need because of insurance and not having enough money. Will we ever be able to rise above the struggle?
