Is it weird to ask this here? Sorry, but I have a question.

I think most foods I can tolerate. Of course, I do dislike some foods, but I do not like the idea of wasting food ever. There was a point in my life where I barely got food, and was not allowed to eat a lot; it humbled me greatly to appreciate the existence of food on my plate. But for the life of me I cannot tolerate mushrooms. I do not know why, but the taste is very disgusting to me. I cannot stomach it; it makes me feel ill. Even if I dislike a food, I will try to eat it if there is no other options, but I really cannot eat mushrooms. I wish I was not like this, because my whole family loves mushrooms and there are some dishes that look pretty good with it. So when dinner is cooked by someone else, and there is mushrooms in the dish, I really do not know what to do. Usually I will eat it and not feel well afterwards.
They know I do not like mushrooms, but they do not care how much I dislike the taste or how it affects me. I am not sure why, but I think because they enjoy it so much they do not understand someone who hates it. I am a little sad because I wish they were more understanding, but they probably see me as being spoiled. Am I being spoiled and picky? I feel like this is a problem I must resolve on my own because it is my fault I am like this. I am very apologetic they have to deal with a person like me. I feel very bad I am not being grateful enough for the food I am given.

So can someone give me a suggestion? I would like to find a way to get the food down without it looking obvious I cannot eat it, and also so it does not affect me badly. Is there something I can drink with it, or add to it to avoid the taste? Or should I just try to get over it? Maybe there are ways I can do that.

People on here give me great advice for everything so I though it would be ok to ask here.

Sometimes plugging your nose helps, or taking it like its a pill and swallow water quickly after. Another thing is wrapping or mixing it with other food, like putting it in a piece of bread, smashing it up into rice, or maybe eggs? Theres also tons of mushrooms and ways to prepare them im sure u will at least tolerate one to some extent, i hope i could help! I feel the same way with spinach.. 💩

maybe you can have it with something you like a lot. For example, if I add cheese to anything, it becomes a lot more tasty.
But also, everyone has likes and dislikes regarding food, you can give your portion of mushrooms to someone else who enjoys it so that it's not wasted vs trying to force yourself to eat it.

Fellow mushroom hater here. I 100% just pick them out. I do not care if it offends the other person. I do not want to spend the entire dinner fighting my gag reflex to avoid hurting someone's feelings.

Thank you for the advice! If the mushroom is cooked into the dish where it cannot be separated (like a stew or broth) it is very hard for me to tolerate the flavor even in that. I think it is easy for me to map it out. Maybe I can try finding something that will overpower the flavor then. I think I had it with cheese once, but the mushroom was still too strong. I will try experimenting.

I wish I had your courage and strength! The gag reflex is hard to mask.

I got like an exposure therapy method, you just eat it so much that your mind chills out on it.

This is a long game and you have to push through it a lot, but for foods I've disliked like tomatoes or bell peppers, I would first eat them in stuff (pizza/sandwiches), then eat them with stuff (salads or as a side with a food i liked), and then on their own over like a couple months and by the end I usually grow accustomed to the taste enough that I can eat them. I still am not a big fan of the flavor but I wont gag over it like I use too.

It sounds like mushrooms might be too hard to do this for though since you really hate them, I struggle with them too haha. Godspeed on figuring out a way.
