Ideally would like to hit the medulla/brainstem, is that a hard/risky aim when shooting from roof of mouth?. Other positions to achieve this, same area? What area's of the temple would result in instant death? Please give specifics, like behind ear, through forehead. I've heard stories of people shooting themselves, and them remaining alive for minutes, hours or days on end. Is this a high possibility? What is best caliber? Slug, pellets? Dynamite? Thanks. Would a .45 work or could that just bounce around the brain, would that reach the brainstem if shooting from front side of face/under mouth?

I would say that if you shot at your temple from behind the ear, it is also likely to result in a fatality, but it has to be with a sufficient caliber and also as close as hitting the brainstem as possible. Never shoot under the mouth. That is hollywood myths and you will have a significant chance of surviving, possibly ending up without a face and as a vegetable. I would say practice dry firing before firing off a real round. As far as the caliber, if using a handgun, then .45 ACP, 9mm, .40 would be good choices, and also the .357 magnum, maybe .38 special would suffice as well. If using a long gun, I would recommend a shotgun and using 00 buckshot, or slug. If using a rifle, I would go for .308 Winchester at least or 7.62 NATO rounds for maximum damage. I would discourage using .22lr or .223 or 5.56 NATO rounds as that leaves more room for error and survivability.

Out of all the options you provided, (lets say all options were available) which would be the best *best* choice? Would a larger gauge shotgun be more effective or would that not really matter?

12 gauge is standard and effective, especially with 00 buckshot, or slugs. The thing about shotguns is that it shoots more than just one projectile, rather a group of smaller projectiles that do a lot more damage. It is much more powerful too. However, you still have to aim correctly to ensure that you have the highest chance of success. It makes having a near-miss of a brainstem less important than say, a handgun.
