• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

last night I accidentally went too deep while self harming and I don't know how to properly care about it. It was the first time in 5 days cuz I was on vacation and didn't bring my blades, and I hit the fat layer in one swipe on accident. I know how easily it can get infected but I don't know where to go to properly care for it. I sorta patched it up by using bandaids to bring the skin together but I know that won't last. Any tips?

ive cut quite deep a fair few times on accident. what ive always done is just soaked up the blood with tissue paper/toilet tissue until it isnt profusely bleeding. then wash the area in the sink, dry off and then i just put a bandage over it. one of those compression ones, not the kind you wrap around yourself but im sure that could work too. then just cover with hoodies.

i always check my arm/leg periodically throughout the next few days and give it another clean over. never had any issues though. just keep a close eye on it. ive never faced an infection when ive gone too deep. as long as the area is kept clean and covered you should be okay 💙

Firstly stick to distilled water/saline to wash it out.

It's recommended to use steri strips, medical tape or if you don't have anything else regular bandaids to close the wound shut and once the cut is closed cover with a large gauze pad. For bean cuts you'd want to close the wound for it to heal properly and avoid infection.

If you can't close the wound apply antibacterial cream around the edges of the wound and secure a gauze pad/non stick pad on top with medical tape. Change your bandages every 24-48 hours or if they get dirty/soaked through with blood. You should clean your wound each time you change them.

thank you!! I'm currently in school right now but I could leave and go to a cvs or something during lunch because it's an open campus. Is there any specific brand you recommend?

+1 for getting steristrips to close the wound when its clean (it will scar badly if you leave it open and will be much harder to look after the wound) and keeping it covered with clean dressings changed regularly.

Pharmacys should have steri strips in their first aid sections. Along with adhesive dressings and gauze pads (that are not adhesive) and disinfectant wound wipes. Though water is best for the fresh injury.

sorry for the late reply! not too sure on brands unfortunately, but i used to use these sorts of ones. the type you pull over the wound rather than the bog standard bandages you cut to length and wrap around the area. my parents always had them for if we injured our arms/legs and needed support, so we always had them in the house. should be pretty easy to find in chemist shops or the health/first aid section in other stores.

just make sure to keep periodically checking it throughout the day, adjusting and keeping sure its clean. and don't really keep it on when you sleep. the last thing you want is for the wound to start sticking to the bandage.

hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic gel if it gets a little bit infected. if it gets a LOT infected, go to urgent care. sepsis is a big deal. take good care.

Do not use hydrogen peroxide. Also, the generic type of antibiotic ointments that you get at the pharmacy should not be used to treat any infections. If you get an infection then go to the doctor. Those ointments are generally more for small cuts and scrapes, not infections affecting deeper cuts.

Hydrogen peroxide can kill off healthy tissue leading to a prolonged healing period and an increased chance of infection.

I recommend using saline solution or distilled water to flush the wound. Then, apply an antiseptic and antibiotic ointment (optional, but it does help a bit with the bandage sticking to the cut) around the edges of the wound, being careful not to get any of it inside it. From there, you can place some gauze pads over it and wrap it using a gauze roll. Then just secure it using medical tape. I've also found that cohesion tape is a pretty good alternative if you cannot get your hands on any gauze rolls.

gauze and medical tape would be best. you can use an antibiotic cream like neosporin after cleaning the area with soap and water to avoid infection. keep the area as clean as you can and obviously avoid reinjuring this particular cut if you can.

It all works. Not perfectly (such as hydrogen peroxide) but it all aids the body to do what it needs to do. You dont have to get too scientific with it. Its mostly good oldfashioned common sense. Im praying for you to have a painless and speedy recovery. Just keep changing your bandages every few days, and make sure when you take them off to do it slowly so you're not ripping open the wound again.

No, it does not "all work". What the hell does that even mean? Treating deeper cuts isn't something as simple as "just use commonsense". Deeper cuts, especially fat cuts and deeper, are much more vulnerable to infection and require more aftercare to reduce the probability of there being any complications. In reality, SH aftercare in general requires more than just "good old fashion commonsense". Hence why it is such a big deal in many SH communities.

You are right. It is much more complicated than I realize. Thank you for going into even more details about the proper treatment. I learn from what you say. I've always found basic first aid to be inspiring, but never been very good at it because I'm not good with complicated things, and more of a simple person. My suggestion was based on my experience in my own life. I have survived doing things wrong obviously, that's what I meant by "it all works".

Yes but only with lit matches and once with a hot oven tray. If it goes to blisters it gets really weepy and I'd imagine at more risk of infection. Also too hard to judge severity at the time. I've never tried boiling water because the inability to control depth and extent of the scalding freaks me out.

What's your strategy for controlling depth with matches and preventing burning if you don't mind me asking?

An antiseptic wash like chlorhexidine is the best! Peroxide and rubbing alcohol are too strong and may damage the tissue, but I haven't had any serious problems using the latter.
Pat dry then use a thin layer of neosporin/something similar before dressing it.

The matches go out and cool quicky I've found. Otherwise I'd move them if it hurt too much. I don't think you can prevent burning - not sure what you mean. If you mean preventing myself from burning myself, I've substituted cutting mostly these days. Not the best substitute I'm sure my therapist would agree but there's more control with cutting.

Sorry I meant to write "prevent infection". Also is cutting not worse than burning? Ironically I'm burning myself as I see it as the a moderate alternative to cutting.

Preventing infection is pretty generic. Clean daily if the wound isn't dry. If it's dry, keep it dry and protect with a dressing. Ideally. Cos sometimes I'd hope for an infection. If the burn causes blistering there's more danger of infection than a clean cut with a blade, depending on how deep I suppose, and the tissues have more damage from a burn compared to a cut. .
