It depends on the method you will use. You would never beat the SI 100%, cause it´s one of our basic instincts.

Generally people try to use opioids/opiates, benzos, alcohol and other cognition altering substances to help with overcoming the SI. Obviously one draw back is that you might feel so good when you dope yourself up that it may make you think twice and you'll abort the suicide.
You can search 'survival instinct' in the top right hand corner and check the 'search titles only' box to read this question being answered countless times in different contexts (if you haven't done that already).

and to add to what schopenh mentioned about sedating yourself. Another drawback could be you end up passing out before going through with it.

Is there any need to beat the SI? You can make it lower, but what is the point in totally nullifying it?
Isn't this an achievement to prove yourself before death that one is stronger than animal instinct. A victory of human mind over the fears, instincts and doubts.

Getting over SI is the biggest hurdle in ctbing. Its the only reason I m still alive. But there are moments when I m alone and the suicidal thoughts are at the peak and probably that's the time I can commit ctb. So my guess is the only way I can commit ctb is when I m in one of those phases where I m most depressed n suicidal. Thinking abt. Some of the good old past and what could have been is something that gets me depressed most and I know it will help me get over the dreaded SI.

I'm finding watching and listening to suicide talks are helping rather than watching TV shows I enjoy making me think this world isn't too bad... Until I have to work to keep the roof, TV and food. And then get a phonecall off moaning relatives. And looking at news stories realising society is hell.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense to others basically I'm focussing on the horrors of the world so there's less chance I'll attempt to back out.
To be honest though I think I'm going to have to ensure my method. For example if using poison...
Destroy my phone, tape my mouth shut, chain myself to a point in the room while chucking key out of reach, not a nice way to go because we are trapped in these shitty physical bodies in an evil game.

Thank you for posting this article. It's a good read and super accurate in my opinion. It makes sense that he says someone who can carry out an act of suicide usually has a combination of perceiving feeling like a burden to others and also feeling like one doesn't belong. And that those who are anorexic, etc are used to being in pain and it can build up to a practice of building up to lessening SI. I also agree with him saying that it takes a lot of fearless courage to kill oneself.

I know that we all have very different reasons for wanting to ctb . But personally I could completely relate to the article in that I do feel like a burden, I feel like I don't belong anywhere (esp on Earth), and I've suffered from Anorexia for 16 years so I for sure know what its like to be in pain that's self inflicted. :aw:

It's function of will. A similar path is dealing with severe physical pain sans dope/meds/booze.
