I've seen it asked a few times. It's probably a bit distasteful to put it in a poll but, I suppose I'm curious.

For the poll, I've requested to exclude people on the forum. I suppose because we were presumably already suicidal when we came here. Plus, it goes with the territory that people here may well end up taking their own lives.

Do you think experiencing or knowing about suicides within the family/ friend group mean people are more likely to consider and do it themselves? Do you think having one or multiple suicides within a family and friend group makes it more or less permissible in the group?

I haven't actually known anyone in real life that took their own life. So, I suppose that's the other question. Do you think your potential suicide may 'encourage' others?

If it transpires that I don't feel able to hold on for my Dad to go first, I think my suicide would deeply hurt him. Probably not to suicide though. But, the shock may be enough to bring on 'natural' ailments. The rest of my family are very distant now. I suppose I wonder sometimes how cousins I've never even met would feel. Would it feel shameful maybe. I suspect they'd feel next to nothing at all. Or rather, I hope so. It's not my intention to hurt people with it.

Two people, one a school friend when we were 11-13. We went to different high schools but still saw each other around. She got married at some point, and they were always together, didn't have kids, always seemed so genuinely happy and into each other. Five years ago, she would've been 45, her mom passed, and the following month her husband got really ill very quickly and passed too. She and her husband didn't attend the same church as his parents and then there was a fight about which church to have his memorial service at. I believe her last words, before pulling the trigger, were "it doesn't matter anymore". I'm happy that she had those very happy years of being so alive and in love. The other person was a colleague, who wasn't so lucky to have had the same happiness in life.

Not counting people on SaSu nor indirectly, I perhaps know maybe just one person who has died via CTB (though it was never really confirmed but heavily implied).

Hi, suicide can be genetic, can be contagious, and to have a suicidal friend as an example can encourage the thoughts. It's just my opinion. I want to kms but I think about my parents. I know one day I'll just do it. My cousin did, my friend did, and God knows who else from the family that I don't know about. To me dying is not a big deal. We are all going to die anyway, but to leave the pain behind is the problem in my case. If I can find something untraceable I'll use it right now. Why live the time we have if we are not satisfied? What's the point? We're going to die anyway, right?

I answered zero although technically I know of someone. He was a classmate from when I was very young, and when I heard that he had killed himself, It was like, 20 years after I had last seen him. It did not surprise me, though, even as a very young child, I could tell that there was something "off" about him. I always wondered if he had a rough home life from the way he would act out in school. I was not surprised, when I heard he had killed himself, but sad.

One guy in my highschool hung himself, and he actually was a friend of my friend. From my understanding they said he was drunk during his suicide. Sadly, he was only 15 or 16 years old. Well, technically there was another one, even though I'm not sure I would count it. It was my aunt's ex husband's father. I never met the man, but he was terminally ill and did not want to be a burden on his wife anymore. Everyone was surprised because he was apparently very religious.
Sadly, suicide will effect at least one person one way or another. Average people do not underatand how heavy this decision ways on a suicidal person. Some people are under the impression that suicide is the "easy way out" or impulsive. All though suicide might occasionally be impulsive, most of the time suicidal people are burdened with problems that cause ideation long before they decide to ctb.

I'm so sorry. I never expected someone to know so many.
I'm sorry, no I don't. I phrased it poorly. Meant that at the time a total of 20 people based on poll results.
Still, I answered 5. Family member, two hs friends, two known through work.
I want it for myself obviously but still it's so sad. Life can be wonderful but for so many of us we just want to escape it so badly. To actually go against all of our base instincts. Unreal.

I think it depends on who's in the group. For my family, i know of an uncle that (most likely) shot himself in the head. i say most likely because there was no note, and usually murderers dont break in just to shoot a man and frame it as a suicide (especially in rural, practically desolate towns). Also, what kind of idiot would provide no additional evidence proving it as a suicide... anyway, I certainly think its planted it as an option (per se) in my family's minds, my parents talk about them killing themselves all the time. Ever since it happened, actually. (especially because most of my siblings don't reach out to them whatsoever). But i would say that only applies to people that are more fragile emotionally, who do things just to do things, with no critical thinking. No offense to anyone here, obviously.

I don't personally find the poll distasteful, might just be me.

I'll be honest, 0. I don't know how I'd react if someone I knew died. I'd probably end up questioning the timeline that led someone else to die in my stead maybe... I don't know...

I met 3 people, I can't say they were friends or close because in a couple of cases I only saw two girls once and I saw one boy about 3-5 times.

In none of the cases did I know the method they used, out of respect for their pain.

A close friend and someone I knew in NA we'd speak in group together they died before I really got to know them. I've known others who've died by drug overdose they were addicts like me and never left any note so I guess it was accidental

When I was 8, my babysitter who was an older woman CTB and it was her daughter and myself who found her. Had a kid at my high school CTB when I was in grade 10. My cousin who was 17 hung himself. I've lost 4 friends to OD over the last 5 years but as far as I know, they were all accidental.

That's so shocking- about your babysitter. Very traumatic I'm imagining- for the both of you- her daughter especially. Do you keep in touch with her? I imagine an experience like that binds you for life. That's so many losses. I'm so sorry.

Never kept in touch... my parents moved cities shortly after that. I was very young so it didn't really hit me till I got older.

My mom and her mom/my grandmom so I'll be concluding the cycle as I have no kids nor want any. So it'll end with me but I feel like it feels right that way. I do think bc I knew they did it, it kept suicide on my mind as an option but I'm also weary of ruining anyone's life with that tragedy but I am not in touch with family as I once was and live far away and they have there own lives, and my dad is also gone and am divorced with no partner. So I don't think it'll matter that much since no one is depending on me. I'm sure people will be sad or shocked but it won't ruin anyone's life.
