How many "hermits" has access to gun but chose to commit violence before committing suicide in the US?

I just saw a news in Reddit that Montana dude killed his relatives weeks after he was told to move out. It was traggic news. However what I couldn't understand is that he decided to kill his relatives before killing himself.

So the news got me wonder why? Why couldn't he just kill himself? How often this type of crimes happens there?

For context:

I'm a hermit myself, though I'm 28m a total of 5 years on off between college years. And live in a country where no regular has access to gun. I do think it's much easier to just go off myself in a quiet place if I had access to gun.

I had tried hanging myself and to no avail due to my fear and being not fully prepared. I even bought SN, and it sits in my wardrobe for half a year. Having access to gun is literally my wet dream. So his choice sounds very strange to me.

I'm probably naive so I'd like to know about this. Thanks!

It's not uncommon for American males to take family members or others (like classmates or random strangers) with them when they CTB by gun (but often it's their wife or ex-wife & kids). This is nothing new. They target whoever they blame for all their problems, and the kids are usually just collateral damage. The case in Montana sounds pretty straightforward: they had just asked him to move out, he blamed them for being his reason to CTB, & he wanted to take revenge. Some suicidal people just want their pain to end, others want to cause as much pain as they're feeling, especially to those they blame, and they feel that they're entitled to do it. Idk what else to tell you.

In cases where it's a couple or even a family I used to always assume it was done in anger. Now it seems there are couples planning it that are doing it to stop some one they love from suffering. I'm suffering so much I wish I had someone who would do it to end my suffering. When it's a couple and one or both are suffering from painful health issues I always wonder if it was planned.

I think he had already moved out, but yeah, his ex-wife & his kids were among the dead & he set the house on fire, he obviously cared much more about revenge than he did about just putting himself out of misery. It seems he thought it was worth the risk of getting caught.

Idk, it's too depressing to look at the data. I just know it's an American male problem that will just continue to get worse.
