I wasn't sure with one idiom and let AI review a post of mine. And well my English is seemingly dogshit. I also don't study linguistics and I can assure you for college works my English is way better.

My spelling, grammar and punctuation is also not the best in my native language when I chat with my friends. It is not the worst but my friends are stricter in abiding to certain standards. I assume this idiom is also skewed.

The thing is it feels like wasting time. I know one should Not fully ignore All of it. And there are some Very valid points how important correct language is. Damn, David Foster Wallace is my favorite author. But come on it is an online forum.

It probably undermines valid points of mine if it feels like a 5 year old formulated my posts for a native speaker. But I won't use Autocorrect. Maybe I should Do it. Currently, I Text with my phone and the keyboard oft (I noticed yes that's German for often but I will use that version because it is more funny in this context) recommends German words which is another layer of annoyance. (German idiom)

What about you?

I try to proof read stuff before I post. I'll look up spellings if I'm unsure. But, I'm not obsessive about it. I'm sure there are still lots of mistakes!

It amazes me how many mistakes people make in formal letters and emails. I'm pretty poor myself with spelling and grammar, so if I can see glaring mistakes, they must be everywhere.

The classic was when I got invited to an interview and the date had already passed! The letter wasn't late either. They'd just got mixed up. When it came down to it though, they were a nicer firm to work for, funnily enough. So, it's not everything.

On SaSu my personal thing is idgaf if your grammar is bad, I'm using bad grammar rn and I do it all the time, but I think people should be considerate and make sure their posts are legible (space our paragraphs, use somewhat decent punctuation)

I hate people who use bad grammar in professional settings, especially teachers or people who are in a high up administrative position, it disgusts me and it feels disrespectful!! I had a dyslexic history teacher who used better grammar and made an effort to make himself understood a lot more than most neurotypicals I've encountered.

I had a drama teacher (former English teacher btw) who was allergic to basic syntax and would even use the phone mic to send google classroom messages, it was abhorrent and I didn't respect her for that reason alone. She also walked around barefoot. Again if you're not in a high up position and you're a normal person then I don't care, but it's very easy to fake having decent grammar when you're typing on a phone or computer so at least take advantage of it lolz.

It's no big deal to me if a person's spelling and grammar/punctuation legitimately suck, but I don't do too well with the shorthand a lot of people are using these days. I just find it annoying and tryhard. Things like "sm" instead of "so much." Like we all know you're not that cool, just type normally you know?

I'm a slow reader and sometimes accidentally mix up, omit, or add words to what I read (no dyslexia diagnosis). So I think grammar and punctuation are important to the extent that the lack thereof doesn't affect my ability to understand the text. I don't demand excellence. I just want to read and understand text without needing to slow down or read something three times to understand it. As for spelling, I don't mind errors (typos) as long as the context helps me identify the word.

Some of my pet peeves are:
  • Homophone errors: they're their there; it's its; you're your
  • Not expanding uncommon acronyms
  • Run-on sentences
  • Unclear references
  • Text walls / no paragraphs
English is my second language and I make errors too. But most of the above is not restricted to English. It's about how you structure your text and helping readers to understand you. For example, people on this forum like to use acronyms and sometimes they seem to use acronyms as a means to gatekeep the conversation.

Your grammar, spelling, and punctuation have little effect on me. I know I'm not perfect with it and don't really care

The people that irritate me are the grammar police, who, while criticizing you, have improper grammar or spelling.

I had one years ago who criticized someone for bad grammar, and while giving them hell, made a few mistakes. So I, being the asshole I am, criticized him. Told him a certain letter should have been capitalized, a comma should have been used to prevent a run on sentence, and he failed to use a period.

Several minutes later, the grammar cop deleted his post because he knew he just got screwed! 😄😄

For SaSu specifically:

I don't really care about spelling and grammar as long as I can parse what they're saying to an extent.

Slightly less inclined to read walls of text because they're hard on my eyes. I appreciate when people break things up into manageable pieces to facilitate an easier read. It's not a deal breaker though.

If I do have problems parsing a post, I may ask some clarifying questions because I genuinely do want to understand. Not everyone is willing to clarify, explain or expand upon their points though.

I'm not a mind reader, but sometimes people seem to act like I live in their head and see the same way they do--I don't which is why I need all the help I can get to understand things the way they want them to be conveyed.

I hate making mistakes, of course grammatical errors probably due to my autism and sensitivity. Whenever I find bad English in my post, it makes me so ashamed and negative self-talk about the mistake floods in my head.
But I don't have enough skills and knowledge to write correct English sentences at once... Maybe I pushed Edit button more often than Like button to fix errors. I hope this post doesn't have broken English 🥺

So long as it's readable, then I'm all good with it. If I really have to put effort into understanding what you wrote, I'm probably not gonna read it. For my own posts, I try to keep to the same standard. My grammar is probably off and no doubt occasional spelling mistakes, but hopefully people can understand me and that's all that matters to me.

not important. I don't care for it, I can understand all posts as long as they are in english, if not I can use a translator.

I try to write it myself but my English level is not very high and I use the proofreader to see if I have written it right. Grammar is important in any language but even more so to make yourself understood.

I recognize that now I am able to read and understand better the messages that people write (the more you practice the more you improve).

I believe that on a forum like this spelling and grammar should not matter at all. I do try to break my posts/responses into reasonable chunks to make things easier to read though.

Mainly I think it's not important because many people here have English as a second or third language, also some people have specific typing styles due to trauma/mental health/physical ability to type/neurodivergence, a member on here with the username 'dot' comes to mind first as an example of that. But basically this site can be a safe haven for people who are not accepted by their community or families in real life, for suicidal people to find others who will actually listen and have empathy instead of immediately dial emergency services, for people with trauma who cannot relate to others in real life in a way society deems "normal" or "socially acceptable".

For all of those reasons I think criticizing folks on this site for bad grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation would be ableist, rude, and exclusionary. To take a safe space and say 'no actually you don't belong because you can't write as well as me' is cruel.

I have an idiosyncratic way of typing that I am constantly redefining the rules of. It drives me absolutely insane, but I cannot type any other way because it causes me discomfort for whatever reason.

If I really tried I could type in a grammatically correct manner. Argh.

The grammar, spellings and punctuations in my SaSu post are important to me. I think that if I ignore those things, even the slightest of the mistakes can grow big and then it will affect my overall grasp of the language.
However, I know I write shit with this depressed brain.

I worked as a newspaper editor for years and it took a long time for me to not be bothered by spelling or grammatical errors. Now, as long as I can tell what I'm reading, I'm good with it.
