I am quite ambivalent on that. I am currently quite manic and the sad vibes can help to ease my mania. Sometimes I enjoy to feel sad when I listen to the music. It is this melancholia or weltschmerz. It makes me aware that my life has an end. That there is limited time and thus limited pain I have to endure.

Many of this sad songs have to do with love. Sometimes this hurts me too much. I am quite sensitive on that topic. Maybe I am self-pitying myself too much when I listen to that music. Though it is true that my life is quite hellish.

When the artists are dead I often envy them. There is this feeling that I want to be dead too. That someday this nightmarish trip will be over and I will be at peace (hopefully) just like them.

For me, there are two aspects to depression: "I feel sad" and "I feel empty." And "I feel empty" is a lot more dangerous to me because when I'm feeling this way, what would stop me from CTB? Success doesn't matter. Failure doesn't matter. Connections are meaningless. Nothing to do but check out.

But when "I feel sad", that's when I can listen to sad songs and resonate with them. It's sad and yes there's some self-pity, but even with all that it's better than "I feel nothing." I also think songs explain a lot about life. Like when Johnny Marr wrote, "I was looking for a job and then I found a job / and heaven knows I'm misrable now... Two lovers entwined pass me by / And heaven knows I'm miserable now." I think a lot about that

Sad music is the only kind of music that is bearable for me, I often listen to songs very quietly. At this point nothing really comforts me or makes me feel better, depressing music just further reminds me of my pain, how I feel trapped in a world that I do not belong in.

So-called sad music, if anything, makes me feel better.

I listen to sad songs when I want to cry and get it all out. When I was a child I found the Diana Ross song 'I'm Still Waiting' so sad and I kind of wonder if it's because I knew it would be me now. That's very self pittying!

Weirdly though, I also cry at music that is beautiful. Not entirely sure why that is.

I can't listen to any music whatsoever anymore. It elicits feelings and feelings are too painful.

"By your side " by Sade … used to sing it to my gf when she was scared and down at night after she'd had nightmares … it comforted her … then she ditched me later …
