Following
I've seen some other recipes floating around (amazon sells an ebook or two)

I've never heard anyone speak on them about their effectiveness, am open to others thoughts but I'm pretty doubtful

The ingredients seem readily available. Malonic acid which has flavoring uses. Ethanol and sodium which are out there. The recipe does not tell you when to mix the malonic mixture in with the sodium ethanol mix which is odd. Like they forgot something. One min its in a steel cup and the next min its done?

I have studied these instructions and although I agree they are sketchy I do not think you are supposed to ever add the sodium ethanol mixture to the steel cup. Metallic sodium is highly corrosive and ethanol is toxic, It is my assumption they are used as the boiling agent only. Water or other substances would most likely completely boil away before you have completed the process at the temperatures and times suggested. Also great caution needs to be taken when boiling metallic sodium as to not breathe in any fumes or make contact with bare skin. I would be interested to hear anyone elses opinions or experiences with this.

Interesting, but I'm no chemist.
This. Wouldn't feel safe drinking my own homemade substance when things like SN are so much more readily available and reliable.

This is certainly a much simpler version for the synthesis of nembutal that I've seen so far. I can't comment on whether it is viable or not, my chemistry isn't that good. However, I might know someone who could look it over.

The only instructions I would trust to work without additional info is the process five EXIT Australia members recorded when they were doing a project to see how feasible it would be for a group of non chemist's to create enough nembutal for their own purposes. They were able to do it in a weekend, but they did have to create some of the lab equipment as they weren't able to source it. So, we know it's possible, but I would never expect to hear much more about any other successful attempts, synthesizing nembutal is extremely illegal and people are cautioned to zip their lips. Basically make it and then never speak of it again.

I can't say whether or not this would work, but outside of a laboratory environment and without proper safety equipment, you could die trying.

You have to add the sodium though; the ethanol is to allow it to heat and become liquid in a non-water environment.

But you have to add it, the full name is literally sodium pentobarbitol. Hence metallic sodium.
Also ethanol is just alcohol. Methanol is very bad but pure ethanol is legit basically EverClear.

I just wanted to add a little more to this thread - just in case anyone is considering this.

Metallic sodium is reactive in air and can be explosive in water. It is shipped/stored in mineral oil or kerosene to keep it from reacting. It needs to be handled with proper safety equipment as its melting point is below the temperature of your skin. If you forget and touch it with your hands, it will begin to react with the moisture in your skin. There are instructions available on line to make it yourself, but please don't try. You'll need to exercise great care with it once you've made it and need to store it. If someone found it and opened the jar or played with it, there could be real trouble.

1-methyl butyl-ethyl malonic ester (propanedioic acid or malonic acid) is also not typically shipped to residential addresses. Being an acid, it is of course, corrosive.

When heated, these chemicals will give off fumes and should be used under a hood if at all possible.

I can't try any harder than this to encourage anyone reading this to give this idea a hard pass. If you know a chemist, you might convince him or her to try it, but the synthesis of Nembutal is illegal almost anywhere you might be reading these words.

Don't think I'd be up for following a recipe found online...I can't even make a cake from a recipe book and, given my luck, this concoction would do something freaky like give me immortality!

It might make the N itself completely unnecessary! :))
