We often are told to "call the hotline" or seek professional help.

Risk Management Considerations When Treating Suicidal Patients

Read the above PDF with the legal risks and warnings when taking on a suicidal patient.

There is almost no upside in the medical field toward treating a chronic suicidal patient who is treatment resistant.

The result is that the patient is left to either live with continuous suicidal ideation or they seek out places like this. Not recruited like fixthe26 claims but actively seek out ways to end their pain. The medical community considers the patients a liability and a risk and would prefer (who wouldn't) to not deal with treatment resistant patients anyway.

The shocking attitude to me is the people who are completely surprised that someone with this level of daily pain isn't finding a community like sanctioned suicide. As though just willing the problem away produces rainbows and unicorns.

yep, it's all cya to ensure they're held indemnifiable from any legal hairiness that might arise when enraged family members try to sue for malpractice after their supposed loved one has died by suicide when under or immediately following that 'professional's 'care'.

no one actually cares about us. they just care about how we make them feel and what inconveniences we bring into their lives. so they shuttle us off so someone else can deal with the problem. ie ignore and overmedicate it.

There's few upsides in the medical field in general, there are whole specialties in medicine that people don't want to do because they're more likely to get sued in them and the nursing shortage is a major problem for a reason. Covid only exacerbated this problem.
I mean, if they're underage then of course they should have no choice but to listen to what the parents. However if they are an adult and of sound mind/are considered of sound mind on the proper medications and all other measures to improve the quality of their life has failed and they still choose to ctb then I wholeheartedly believe that psychiatric facilities should make them sign some legal document freeing the facility of liability, give them the means to do so and allow them to terminate their life in a safe and reliable environment. I'm sure there's plenty of nuance but all the more intelligent people can figure that out.

If someone wants to go, they're going to do it regardless of what anyone tells them and they're going to find a way to ctb whether anyone likes it or not and of course it's natural for parents to be upset and they may want to place blame on someone but they're not kids anymore….

The only time people are unable to make decisions about their lives seems to be when they're suicidal but people can choose not to treat cancer and let it kill them or walk away with life threatening injuries and refuse to get treated. It just doesn't make sense..

"Covid only exacerbated this problem."
I feel very guilty about using any medical resources for this reason.

Even more scary, only 6 states mandate suicidal ideation training as part of therapy license renewal.
Which states?

Exactly.

This only shows how shallow all those cries of "talk to a professional!!!" are. This is in most cases considered the first and only line of treatment for someone suicidal, and yet not even they want to deal with the suicidal.

All it amounts to is "out of sight, out of mind." That's the way society deals with most problems.

Its not just that. If a patient commits suicide and the therapist knew they were suicidal and didn't blow the whistle? BLAM. Their license is done for.

The saddest thing is that there are people who care about us. I've been with therapists who give a shit, but the situation acts like a gate. Am I going to be honest about where I'm at with a therapist if their only viable response is to call their boss and get me put inpatient? No. So you end up with a situation where the patient now can't trust their therapist, and if the therapist isn't a moron they'll know something is wrong, and now they have to be suspicious of the patient. Its counter-intuitive.

Every society has historically invented its own means of treating the untreatable: voodoo, prayer, bloodletting, exorcism, etc. Humans simply don't cope well with the idea of things they cannot control and so nominate "professionals" to eliminate uncertainty.
