When you (and a large group of people) remember something incorrectly. So called because many people had the belief that Nelson Mandela died in prison.

One example for me was remembering an episode of 'Bergerac' wrongly. I remember seeing an episode when I was young where one of the characters ended up paralyzed- as I remembered it anyway. I was so sure that Jim Bergerac (the lead character/ detective) was considering shooting them (assisted suicide.) The episode really haunted me but then, even at the time- I felt like it was the kinder thing for them to do.

I eventually ended up buying the series, anticipated that episode coming up and found it was nothing like I remembered it. I don't think there was any talk of assisted suicide. I'm not sure Bergerac even knew the person. Even now, I can't remember it properly- because my remembered version was so strong.

I also have one or two events in childhood where I'm not sure whether they really happened or, whether they were a dream. I have a vague memory of visiting distant family and going to some sort of carnival. It feels so vivid in places that, it feels like it must have been real but, I don't really know.

Do you have misremembered things that you feel so sure of?
