Just curious how many of us went through this.
I didn't find this question in the recent survey conducted by this forum, though I think it should have been included.
I had been bullied many times in young age and I believe it drastically impacted my mental health and had a major impact on my suicidal ideation.

Yes, but as an adult in the workplace over my physical ill health. I stood my ground for far too long and this resulted in more physical health problems due to the stress and worse mental health. It is actually jawdropping how cruel educated adults can be. Like a pack of hyenas.

I wouldn't say I was bullied as a school child exactly, but I remember reading about a study that said something like serious bullying at school had a bigger impact on people than bad treatment by the family

Totally agree, I witness it all the time in my workplace too. Especially when a new worker joins the team it seems like "old" workers feel the duty to humiliate him/her in one way or another, it's so disgusting!

Back when I was going to school I did get bullied as well as been the bully in some situations. I don't think it has any relevance whatsoever to my current situation though. If anything it has made me tougher physically and helped me identify bullies in the adult world and disassociate with those people.

I had a surgery that left me in pain and discomfort. For the first couple of years my workplace was pretty supportive, helped by the fact I had many friends and allies there. A couple of years on I was targeted by one bully whose modus operandi was to make up rumours (this is an extremely common strategy) to discredit me. At the same time my boss began to realise I wouldn't go back to being the physically healthy person I used to be. I believe I was still turning in a good performance but this is a very common experience for people with physical health problems, bullying in the workplace. The really creepy thing is it completely spiralled from there, over the years the workplace became bitchier and more and more people turned on me, the stress caused me to get more and more health problems, which just made it worse. Why I didn't just quit I have no idea, but I was disinclined to make myself unemployed. I kick myself every day for not getting out of that toxic environment sooner. It was so behind the back that I didn't realise how extremely bad it was. I would still be affected by the bullying, but be over it to an extent by now, If it were not for the fact that I am still left with some of the physical health problems I developed, and as a consequence of those I made mistakes that left me with mental damage. Long story sorry! But it is my observation that the cruel way that humans treat each other seems to underlie a great deal of mental health difficulty.

I used to think I was the bullied kid in school but while I did get harassed by a kid (called me names and told me to not talk to my classmates) I did fight back. I'm a nerd, if you will, but I'm also so far out in the sidelines that nobody bullied me bc nobody knows me. If I were a little bit more popular I might have been the bully.... Sorry to people who had to suffer through it. My biggest bully is probably myself lol nobody hates me more than I do.

As an adult in workplaces and, more recently, by mental health professionals

Numbers speak for themselves. Bulling absolutely can destroy mental health and induce life long repercussions. I've had nightmares about being bullied for more than a decade after school.

Bullied pre-school, bullied at some of the schools, bullied by a teacher, bullied at some of the workplaces, and of course at home, also in relationships. Past bullying does not bother me

I'm been ostracized and bullied so many people in my life. I'm finally smart enough to give up on people all together unless I need them for something. I always make the mistake of thinking a person could ever genuinely give a damn about me. But the fact that I'll never feel welcomed in this world reduces my SI every time I think about it. When I find myself thinking that I should go, I think about how shifty things have been so far. How many times I've prayed to be a better less anxious person only to be ignored by the one thing you should be able to count on to help me (god).
COVID-19 has shown me just how selfish and mean people can be. You'd think that a pandemic would bring people together and maybe be a humbling experience. But no. Humans are just bad.

Yes and I continued to be up until very recently. I was a bully myself when I was a child but quickly came to realize how wrong my actions were. Even though I was only a child at the time I'm still deeply ashamed of my behavior and have apologized. So maybe it's hypocritical but I just can't fathom how adults can be such bullies. The cliches are true though that bullies are projecting. I now know and recognize that those who tried to purposely tear me down have something they hate about themselves. I just wish they could practice some self loathing and leave everyone else out of it.

Agreed. There have been so many people throughout the lockdown talking about being kind and all that jazz, but in the town that I live all that I've seen are people (in general) pushing and shoving past each other in shops and in the street, and being aggressive... Oh, and my neighbours are still loudmouthed, two-faced, bullying dick heads - basically business as usual. It hasn't really changed much beside the unnecessary patient deaths. They say: "We're all in the same boat!"... Really? It must be an overcrowded sinking boat then.

I'm not saying that everyone has been like this though, because there are community volunteers, healthcare workers, etc.

Bullied in primary school, middle school, high school... mainly by peers and once by teacher. Fucking old prick. I don't even know why as I was always shy and polite and I also had good marks. She eventually become nicer in 2nd class but fuck her anyway. There was even a period of time in my life I considered making a school shooting but thank god I didn't do that.

Bullying makes me sick and I am really sorry for all of you out there who have suffered or are still suffering from this form of torture. I'm one of the lucky ones who has never been bullied. But don't nobody envy me... I'm still a fucking failure wishing for death every second of every day.

I got bullied really badly in middle school and some of high school to the point of getting PTSD and having nightmares just about every night of it (though my one med seems to be helping me out in not getting any dreams of my bullies)

I was bullied relentlessly in elementary school and junior high. In high school I was lucky enough to be in an enriched program. We were sort of isolated from the rest of the school, and since we were all nerds who had been bullied in regular school, we didn't bully each other. It was actually the most respectful environment I have ever been in.

I have also been bullied by four different bosses who have pretty much made the last 10 years hell on earth. I talked to the union and the guy's advice was something along the lines of "your department is notoriously full of assholes; go find a new job somewhere else" .

Horribly as a teenager. The worst time was when I got convinced to skip school for a day, they lured me into the woods, stole my backpack and started spitting on me. I started to skip school on my own after that to avoid them. I ended up changing schools and things got a little better, but it was such a shit time.

I have been bullied, and, I regret to say, have also perpetrated bullying myself. The phenomenon of bullying is bizarre, cruel, and there seems to be no productive reason for it. There's clearly a spectrum of severity of bullying, but the boundary between acceptable behaviour and bullying can be fuzzy, where exactly is the line? It seems impossible to define, although we may be able to intuit a general sense. We vary in our sensitivities, so what one person may perceive as bullying and take offence to, another may not. While bullying is immoral and we obviously want rid of it, there must be a reason, or reasons for it (it cannot be without a cause). Understanding these hidden causes will allow us to work towards eliminating it completely. And this is very important, because it creates a lot of suffering.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you perpetuate bullying yourself? What I notice vividly is...........when I was younger and strong I don't remember anyone doing anything like bullying towards me as an adult...........then when I became vulnerable it was like that brought out bullying behaviour in some of those around me. As if........people want to do this towards those they perceive as weak. Is that how it works?

Bullying definitely seems like a way for one person to get power or control in their life. They have a way of sniffing out those who are vulnerable.
