I'd like to go the way Kate Spade and Robin Williams went. That is, having the carotid arteries compressed enough to make me pass out and then die from lack of oxygen getting to the brain through blood. This way, I can still breathe while in the process of dying. It's either this or a gunshot wound to the head. I'd prefer the less messy route.

How did Kate Spade and Robin Williams do it? I've practiced by tightening a pair of pajama pants around my neck but I never passed out.

I think you'd have a better chance of success if you tied a rope to the doorknob, threw the rope over the top of the door, and then hang from the other side. Unless you're really short, you'd need more distance from the doorknob to be successful.

I agree with the poster above me for sure, honestly there are many many ways to do carotid compression and partial suspension isn't the only one. Although if you're looking for a "painless" or fast enough that you don't feel pain method then I'd suggest you think a lot about your chosen method. For a long time I was ready to settle on carotid compression, or I thought I was, until I realised it's a lot harder to do than people make it seem.

Yes you can still breathe but it's far from comfortable and when applying enough pressure to close the carotids you're risking putting enough pressure to break the hyoid (especially if suspending with your own body weight, which is far more than necessary to close the carotids).

I recall reading that it's something like ~5kg needed to close the jugulars, ~12kg to close the carotids and around 15-20kg to close the windpipe. When applying the proper amount of force or more to close the carotids other risks are introduced and if that's okay with you then awesome go for it, just want you to be aware because it can be very very frustrating if you realise that your chosen method might not actually be the way.

Good luck

the thing I don't get is that everything I read says that you pass out within seconds, so not being able to breathe shouldn't be an issue, and yet the experiences of people who failed seem to indicate otherwise.

why not just hang it from the doorknob on our side and just sit down? is it because there is less support for it or something?

This is what I'd like to do. Maybe I need to use something more sturdy than a pair of pajama pants? Perhaps an extension cord or something.

Yes, the people who failed never closed off the carotids or didn't close them off completely. They're much deeper within the neck than the superficial jugulars and- although I maybe completely wrong here- I think because of this they can be harder to compress if you have a "strong neck". Either way it's very difficult to compress the carotids while not pressing on the windpipe as they run to the side of it almost, I read of people making all sorts of contraptions and questioning which type of cord to use and not being aware that something softer may hurt less but it will also spread the force more and compress your carotid arteries less.

So does that mean with full suspension you are more likely to die from strangulation rather than suffocation than with partial suspension?

One could assume that with full, it closes everything off. Veins, arteries and windpipe

I tried strangulation, hanging from doorknob sitting down but it was not easy because the survival instinct and discomfort. Your head starts to feel the pressure, you can't breathe, it takes too long and it might help if you took additional drugs to make u be relaxed enough. Whatever you use it needs to not cut into your neck too. That makes it worse.

No, I believe with full suspension you will almost definitely crush the carotids and pass out with seconds, but it will also be painful because you crush the windpipe too.

Thanks for your responses. I've decided I'm going to go the route of gunshot wound to the head. It seems much easier. Part of me is afraid of failing, but I've also read that it's one of the more reliable methods. I have to get my affairs in order first, so it may be a month. I've already started the process of getting my affairs in order.

I was thinking of attempting this doorknob method sometime this week. What did you use to strangle yourself? I was going to use a long scarf. Is there any way I could make it successful? Seems like my only option right now..

I used a smooth rope I found at a sporting goods store. I specifically went looking for rope to kill myself with. It was nylon. Maybe it could have worked if I first put a soft cloth headband around neck to make it dig in less.

Did you tie the rope to the doorknob on your side and sit down or on the other side, and throw the rope over the top of the door? Sorry, just confused as to how it's done exactly..

Yes I just tied it to the door knob but I had a weird door situation at that apartment. My door was really small and had a latch handle. There was a big dip between bottom of door and floor. It was a messed up weird old house. Anyway u just have to figure out how to get it so that the rope stays tied and u can let weight fall into it some so it tightens around the neck.

Um, I hate to break it to you, but the death by hanging from doorknob is a ritualistic murder for people who are going to expose things that are really...messy. Think death by the mafia.

I tested partial today, used a knit scarf attached to an over-the-door coat hanger. Scarf was on my lower neck and I could breathe, but got a lot of head pressure that made me back off. I guess that means I was getting the jugular and not the carotid.

Firearm is my preferred method but I don't know how to use one so I'm trying some things.

I think I will try this but the problem is I'm on the taller side, arg … I have a rope in my flat … I will have to start practicing…. My days are numbered

Hanging survivor here... I survived only because the noose failed. Not even sure what happened, I had already lost consciousness. I tested it beforehand to see it could support my weight, so truly unsure given I had passed out already. "Fate," maybe...

It wasn't too bad.... I used a soft fabric to make the feeling around my neck less intense. I kind of slowly leaned into it to a) see how it would feel, and b) make it more bearable. Then I stepped off the chair. Don't remember it being more than maybe 10 seconds before everything went gray, and then I don't remember. Came to on the floor, bleeding from my head in three places - managed to do a header on a slab of marble leaning against the wall...

After-effects: had trouble swallowing anything for a couple weeks, making eating very painful, or even drinking water. Neck pain, not surprisingly. I had a previous nerve issue in my neck, but a year later had a severely herniated disc (actually triggered, in the end, by a panic attack). Probably a minor TBI, though I've had one of those before, and didn't get all the typical concussion symptoms, so only guessing by the damage to my head.

I really don't remember enough to say whether or not breathing stopped completely, though it definitely was restricted (clearly, as I lost consciousness).

I would be worried about SI when it comes to self strangulation as its a bit slower than full suspension
