the thing I don't get is that everything I read says that you pass out within seconds, so not being able to breathe shouldn't be an issue, and yet the experiences of people who failed seem to indicate otherwise.
Hanging survivor here... I survived only because the noose failed. Not even sure what happened, I had already lost consciousness. I tested it beforehand to see it could support my weight, so truly unsure given I had passed out already. "Fate," maybe...
It wasn't too bad.... I used a soft fabric to make the feeling around my neck less intense. I kind of slowly leaned into it to a) see how it would feel, and b) make it more bearable. Then I stepped off the chair. Don't remember it being more than maybe 10 seconds before everything went gray, and then I don't remember. Came to on the floor, bleeding from my head in three places - managed to do a header on a slab of marble leaning against the wall...
After-effects: had trouble swallowing anything for a couple weeks, making eating very painful, or even drinking water. Neck pain, not surprisingly. I had a previous nerve issue in my neck, but a year later had a severely herniated disc (actually triggered, in the end, by a panic attack). Probably a minor TBI, though I've had one of those before, and didn't get all the typical concussion symptoms, so only guessing by the damage to my head.
I really don't remember enough to say whether or not breathing stopped completely, though it definitely was restricted (clearly, as I lost consciousness).
