Anyone have thoughts on the diameter of a handgun barrel? Given my need to keep a weapon private I need to go with a handgun rather than a shotgun. I understand the bigger the better, but at the same time it needs to fit in my mouth. Looking at images the barrels look pretty large... is this an issue? (I'm a medium sized women)?

For barrel size I'm assuming you mean caliber. If so if go with a .45, a .40, or 9mm. Get a self defense round, a hollow point and not a fmj, full metal jacket. That way the bullet will mushroom upon impact and be larger in diameter.

A large majority of handguns will fit in a normal sized mouth.

Instead of barrel size, caliber, you should look for a gun that fits your hand.

If you decide to go with this method I'd still advise learning basic gun handling and also going to a range or an abandoned quarry and shooting it. Two reasons, make sure the gun fires correctly and you know what to expect when you pull the trigger.

Thanks, helpful. As you can see I'm not experienced with guns. By barrel size I really meant the external barrel diameter...eg will it fit in my mouth. I do believe you answered that question.I realize I'm going to need to gain experience before I attempt, and thank you for the recco to go to a range and get comfortable enough. Do you think once would be enough? I'm very torn between this method and hanging. I think hanging is hard to figure out, but doesn't leave a significant risk of permanent injury....thanks again,

You should be able to get enough experience going just once provided you give it enough time.

A handgun to the head given proper placement carries a really high fatality rate, I've heard up to 97% according to the chart on the lost all hope website. The two placements that appear to have the highest success rate are intra orally and just behind the ear. The temple runs a much higher failure rate.

If you need more information feel free to start a conversation with me

Handgun barrels aren't really all that large a diameter. Obviously, larger caliber guns require more "material" on the barrel to contain the larger explosion. Still, about any barrel will fit into anyone's mouth. Are you looking at Internet pics of guns? Pics can be misleading when gauging "sizes" of things. Go to a gun store and just look. Tell them you're looking for something for self defense, BUT you DON'T want any pea shooters. That way you can hold one in your hand and actually feel it. I'd go with .40, .44, or .45, with lean towards a .44 or .45. A revolver may be your best bet for barrel size if you're really concerned about it.
