  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

Has this place ever been described as "pro-suicide" by any member? That seems kinda fishy, though it's probably this site nonetheless.

Apparently there have been former members who have made comments along that line.

I suspect on a site like this you could replace covid in that study with virtually anything and get similar results.

I'm not 100% they're referring to this site though. Could they have pulled this from anywhere here?

"The research team extracted data from an online public forum described by the site moderators as a "pro-suicide discussion forum" designated as an "education resource" and "informal support network for those who wish to die by suicide.""

Hey, why not? I like seeing studies that study actual people out in the world, not just paid undergrads. I really don't want word to get out about the site though, so I'm undecided about this development.

Wouldn't be surprised if it were this site. This site is a researchers gold mine here. With our collection of various mental and physical health issues, desire to exit this world early and very varied social background, this community would represent a unique and valuable study pool unlike any place anywhere online or off. Scary thought, but, a very plausible one too.

Hm. Good point. If they used publicly accessible details though, they don't really need the site's permission.

It's a public forum and everyone here decided to post on a public forum, so I think that's just as fair as studying Twitter or whatever. And to me it seems quite a lot of "outsiders" are watching this forum closely.

Despite the introduction stating this is a pro-suicide community, nothing about the results indicate it to be a pro-suicide community. Most of us have had health problems, financial difficulties, and relationship issues that exacerbates our illness which is true according to their report. Interested to see if they're research goes any further than just making suicide awareness organizations do "walks" instead.

Searching further, they are quoting from this site. Interesting.

Where did they find moderators describing it as a pro-suicide forum? Or an informal support network for those that wish to die by suicide? They must be referencing it from somewhere?

I don't see anything wrong with this. In fact, it's a good thing. Data like this could be used to advice politicians to improve the mental health care system. I think it's very useful to perform scientific studies on the public data available on this website.

Yes, they call it a "pro-suicide" forum and probably most of these studies will. I don't agree with the term, but I'm afraid that's how most outsiders look at this forum.
This is why you shouldn't name sources... Always remember this is a public forum than can and will be accessed by anyone for any purpose.
I agree with this. This is exactly why sources shouldn't be mentioned here.

Ditto on SS being a public forum, which, I believe is more reason to exercise discretion. I'd prefer not to name them, but SS has appeared via SEO (search engine optimisation) on private search engine results. Results I've seen specifically link suicide methods, like salts, to this forum.

The fact that they are studying us... GOOD !!! As long as it's unbiased.
Finding the reasons why and not judging would be great. Most reasons are mental health or class issues.
When the rich keep getting richer and the poor get poorer is a big part of it. For me anyway.
Also I just don't want to do this anymore. Just barely existing so others can buy more yacht's and shit on golden toilet's.

I'm not surprised that researchers would be monitoring this site. Where else are you going to be able to see people frankly discussing their suicidal ideations in the amount of detail that we do? I don't think there's anywhere else quite like this on the net.
Understanding why and how people commit suicide is a worthy undertaking. The mental health and psychology fields are woefully behind on this!

I've suggested many times to add a signature to messages that can be used by people that are trying to bring SS down, but no one thought that it's worth doing it. The signature should write that partial or complete reproduction of the message is forbidden and it can be pursued by law.
