I have been here since it's early days despite what my profile says.

If they take down this forum I'm threatening to become much more extreme in my prochoice stance. I have made this threat multiple times already. And we all know how ugly extremist beliefs can get so I don't want to go there but if I have no choice I will.

I have seen this website shrink itself considerably so many times to adapt but fuck that. I'm still not okay with the that we were made responsible of the death of a 17yo minor and how everything went down at increasing rate from there.

I'm in the middle of a life altering even right now (was hit by another massive wave last night..) and have nowhere to turn.

I don't have any actual friend on this website but I still feel like I belong somehow.

This is a safe space. A spafe space that a bunch of extremist bullies try to shut down. Do you know what usually happens when extremists try to fight normal people? Those normal people turn into extremists themselves. Hate fuels hate and no matter how hard you try to stay rational, eventually it will get to you as well.

Essentially what these idiots are aiming for is to turn suicidal people who utilize this site for mental support into an angry mob with nothing to lose... Human stupidity at its finest.

I agree- I think most of us would feel lost without this place. However- I'm not sure just how bad this new threat is- assume you're referring to the new US law that they're trying to introduce? Did you read the post by Cathy Ames the other day? Or the bill itself?

It sounds to me like the restrictions are EXTREMELY specific- so they may well not impact things as much as feared. Still- I do definitely share your concerns. It does make it at least feel like the net is tightening...

Even if this site gets shut down- which is unlikely- I believe many of the people here will band together and ressurect the site in a similar form. Even in the early days of the internet, ASH existed. Then, there was the sanctioned suicide subreddit, where I discovered this community. Despite it being shut down, many of the users migrated to this site.

There will always be a need for this type of community, where we can be honest and frank about our thoughts and feelings without the social reprocussions of judgement, shame, and loss of personal freedom.

Even if they manage to shut down one website, others will crop up to fill the gap that's been left behind. The scale of the problem, the sheer amount of suicidal people in this world who don't feel helped whatsoever by conventional methods, is too large for them to silence completely.

They managed to track down @Marquis and force him to leave (blackmailed him and threatened his job). So they can do anything. The law implicitly supports them even I'd what they're doing is explicitly illegal. The law will always be on their side and pretend to be neutral.

Yeah- fair enough. I don't know the full story of @Marquis but I have heard bits and pieces. I bet they are gunning for places like this as much as they can.

Still- I'm not sure they could completely shut it down but perhaps scare people into taking down specifics on methods and stop people advising one another on them- most especially sources I imagine. Reckon everyone should be taking notes on their preferred methods now! God, I feel sorry for the suicidal folk of the future...

It will disappear and there is nothing that we can do about this. Everything will end someday and that is the reality. As long as in someway people still have access to method information then I won't care too much if this website goes. I find it horrific the thought of people failing attempts because of lack of method information, it's disturbing and wrong to try to deny people that and cause them to suffer more.

If this site is shut down I will have a mental breakdown and/or ctb. It's not a threat, it's a true and honest reflection of my mental state. The reason that we're all here is that we've all been fucked over by life. If we are unable to even make a community to, like, op said, "feel safe about feeling unsafe", then we will only be hurt more. Unfortunetely, according to my knowledge about psychopathy and totalitatianism, this is what they want. They simply want to shut down any and all means of resistance to their control, even groups who only wish to ctb and escape it that way. To them any group of people coming together driven by dislike for their reality is their worst enemy. The many guises or "masks" they utilize to achieve their goals are just that, and this is why everyone knows politics is bs. But they can't do anything because of smear campaigns and a complete lack of empsthy (control by fear). So yeah I definitely will have to ctb if this site goes down because it would, confirm my most disturibing suspiscions/anxieties, and otherwise would be a fate so much worse than death I can't even fathom. Oh wait I can. Because I am thinking about it and living it all the time.
