Nothing can go wrong unless someone is hearing the shot and call for help.

Guns overall are perfect way, the only con is the loud noise they create.

as long as the calibre is powerful enough to at least knock you out if it fails to kill you instantly, so that if you drown, you're not conscious.

But yes I'd Imagine that it's a painless and a very effective way of going out, with the correct calibre of course.
