Had a really shitty day. Was very triggered by the fact that the conservative usurper government of the US right now has made it so queer youth can no longer use the 988 line.

So i started freaking out. Because it's starting. The systematic elimination of the people our current gov doesn't like. The only reason to do that is because they want queer kids to kill themselves by having no support. It's fucked.

So I called, because I have no one else to talk to. And like 10 minutes in. She says she doesn't want to talk to me anymore and hangs up.

Why be a suicide help like operator if you can't handle hearing about the shit that makes us suicidal in the first place?

It's all a joke. All of it. Humanity is a failed species.

this is fucked up. i'm so sorry that happened to you. i don't know why an operator would be so bored of a call that she hangs up because she wants to talk to someone more interesting. the 988 line isn't omegle.

The way our society treats suicidal people is so fucked up. they say "reach out when you need help" and "don't bottle it all up", but when you do as directed, they act as if you're some sort of nuisance, as if your anguish is annoying to them. They push people towards ctb, then act suprised when they do. "they died so suddenly" no they didn't, you're just trying to absolve yourself of all blame. It's as if they're incapable of connecting anything. They could stand behind a horse and provoke it, then simply say "hmm, my jaw has innexplicably fractured. It seems that there's blood all over. How peculiar..."

it makes me so mad. i'll start geeking if i think about it too long because when i think about the 988 line i think about how anyone who recommends it does, absolutely want me to bottle up my emotions and go talk to a helpline instead because my emotions are too much for them. friends, family, partners, just about anyone in your life can get too tired of listening to you and just tell you to seek therapy or take meds because you're stressing them out too much. your feelings and mental illness are too bothersome. i mean, aren't you just a burden at that point? i feel so guilty for being depressed. it feels like i'm just not good enough to be cared about because i'm depressed in a bad way instead of a good way where i get over it. i have really strong feelings about the 988 hotline specifically, because they tell you to do the same thing each phone call and you have 50/50 odds of getting an operator that's super bored.

I know they are suffering from a lack of funds and cannot employ enough staffs, and seem tend to hang up in minutes to deal with lots of calls. But it's terrible of the system that is supposed to offer support to leave you in crisis instead. I can say it was a betrayal. Sorry you experienced this. Policymakers won't put money to essential mental health lifelines though they are basically pro-life. Society sucks.

When did you mention that you are queer during rhat 10 minutes? Are you sure being queer was the reason? I wouldn't be surprised it that was true, but don't jump to a conclusion like that immediately.

I mean, while it is very possible that you got a prejudiced person for your call... Let me echo the sentiment of others that 988 is not as useful as a bag of dicks. The whole setup is crap... and beyond useless. I haven't heard of anyone having a good experience much less a helpful one through chat or phone calls. I've never called myself, but I have used the chat and I've talked to AI bots with more personality who seemed to listen more than the "real" people at 988.

It's like the very definition of lip service to the cause that this thing exists in its current form. I don't pretend to have all the answers... but the service being offered and the quality of that service is something that nobody should tolerate... but it is tolerated because most kind of don't care, but it ticks a "see we care but not really" boxes that they think make them "helpers" or whatever.

You should absolutely NOT let a bad 988 experience make you worse. Eating a bag of dicks would be better for any of us than calling that hotline.
