I love reading books I can relate to so if you have any suggestions please comment them.. A suggestion i recommend is a book called I was here. One of my favorite books it's about a girl who kills herself by a type of poison she gets advice on how to end her life from some dude on a site that's like this and her bestfriend takes a road trip to get answers to what lead to her death I don't it's just really relatable ..

I know a book that I did not read but my husband did and said it is very good and contains a man struggling with burns and wants to commit suicide. I can't remember the name but will add it in this post as soon as I can ask my husband what it was called. Edit: this book is The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson.

Girl Interrupted by Susana Kaysen is a book and a movie. It's not about suicide but mental health. The book pales in comparison to the movie but is a true story. I did enjoy the movie when it came out in '99.

Edit to add: A Million Little Pieces by James Frey is another book that comes to mind. I tried to read it when it came out but put it down because I didn't like it at all, so I may be incorrect when I say it is about a man (it was said to be a true story about the author) who is struggling with drug addiction and goes in to get mental health help, detox, so it may contain suicidal tendencies or attempts. I recall it was later said that the author embellished, so it is not true, and he might have been convicted of forgery.

Edit #3 to add: another book that might qualify is the second book in the Twilight series called New Moon. The main character is depressed and does things that a lot of readers considered suicidal. I read all the Twilight books, and yes, the actions to me are very close to suicidal, despite the character's justifications. The book was criticized for that despite that the character isn't necessarily trying to commit suicide (but I think she was in a sense). Audiences thought it sent a bad message to teenage girls revolving breakups and how to handle them. I was one of the people who actually liked the Twilight books despite being in nearly 30 at the time and generally having a more "refined" taste in books than these. So I say check it out if you haven't, though this was my least favorite book of the series and was a bit slow and boring and plotless compared to the other books.

(I'm not editing for the 4th time--lol--so new post.

The Virgin Suicides is another book, but I never read it. Madame Bovery (sp?) is another book, but I never read it.

I think The Hours was also a book, but I only saw the movie w/ Nicole Kidman. It is murder-suicide.

Oh, and Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare (or any variant by another author) is a classic.

(I do not know if you are alerted to edits I make and if edits bump a post or not, so check back here in a day or so in case I put up more if I think of any. i will only make a new post (vs. edit) if too much time goes by.)

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath (who killed herself--the author did). I didn't read this. All her material *may* contain suicidal stuff because she is known for this because she was depressive and did kill herself. So check her out as an author.

The Catcher the the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Read this in high school. I did not like it or relate at all despite that it was other students' favorite book, including my then boyfriend, who loved it.

Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford. Did not read this either.

Edit: From my book list I read, I *think* one or all of theses books from Chuck Palahniuk *may* have a suicidal character. He is the author of Fight Club, and in that book, even, the character is suicidal, but if you saw the movie, it is in a totally different way. So the other books from him to maybe look at are: Invisible Monsters, Choke, and Survivor. I read all these back in '02-'03, so my memory is shoddy. He is a very particularly styled author in his voice, so you may or may not like him. He's not sad but is what I might say is sort of sarcastically negative in an bit of an immaturish, comical way. I think he appeals mostly to younger men in their 20s, or did at the time.

Darn, there are more books on my list: House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus: this is a very good book and quite depressing. He is a very good author. There is also a movie, and that is good as well. I do recommend this.

My husband has met this author IRL but never read this book of hers: The Day I Killed James by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

Life as a House is a movie I saw that I think is also a book. It was a good movie, so I think it would be a good book.

Joe Hill's a Heart Shaped Box is not sad--it is horror--but the monster in it tries to get people to kill themselves. It is a good book by a good author--Stephen King's son.

I am sure I can think of others over time I have heard of, but I do not think I can recall any more I actually read. I have a book list going back 20 years of books from my 20s on I have read and don't see others I recollect with suicidal things, but will keep thinking for you because I only record books I READ cover to cover, and I put A LOT books down early on when I don't like them.
