They took the wire out of my top teeth at the orthodonitist. My saliva was all over everything. A high school girl was sitting on a bench in front of me and saw my saliva. I saw a disgusted look on her face as i got up from the chair.

It's probably not a good idea to stare at her, doing tongue motions, and winking at her while they take the wire out....

What does this have to do with that person being a girl? Most people have a natural aversion to bodily fluids, I think most others would have the same reaction, regardless of their gender. And it's not a judgment of you, the reaction almost certainly came from the fact that they saw a lot of saliva, which they found disgusting.

I do think she was probably not disgusted by you, just the sight of things (although I totally get that it was unpleasant experience for you). Younger people especially may tend to stare at unusual sights with no sensitivity to the individual. Most orthodontic procedures are ugly affairs, especially for you, who was undergoing the whole ordeal.

Why are strangers in a position to observe you during your procedure? This seems strange and definitely an unpleasant violation of privacy. My experience at the dentist has always been that only professionals can see me during any procedure.

Has nothing to do with the fact she is a girl. Boys at that age( and not only) are usually very cruel. Most people your age hate high school because they are/were bullied. It's the period when you have acne and all sort of things( teeth you must fix etc).

My dentist is like that, too. EVERYTHING is open between the treatment areas. I can see in the other treatment areas, and others can see me in my treatment area. I think it has something to do with potential lawsuits for abuse or something by the dentist. It's a litigious time we live in. At least here in the states, and I suspect in a lot of other places, too.

That's really inconvenient, I would hate that. I have bad enough anxiety when it's just the dentist seeing me, that alone keeps me from going a lot of the time.

Yeah, I remember when I first started there more than 20 years ago that's how it was then. It's always been that way. I can't speak to how any other offices are set up, since I haven't been anywhere else in all those years. I do remember it seemed a little off-putting when I first started there, but I guess I got used to it and it seems mostly normal now. I suppose the person on one side can watch what's going on when the dentist is working on me, but usually the dentist is blocking the view of the person on the other side. Sometimes his assistant blocks that side, too. I really can't see anyone gawking at me because you really can't move when he's right there in your mouth, so I'm just oblivious, I guess, if anyone in another chair is watching. Not sure why they would, though. When I'm at the dentist I'm really just concerned about what's happening to me and only me. I hope others are the same. No one is close enough to actually be able to see in someone elses mouth. It is what it is.

because it's funny how silly it feels to be stressed about it
I guess? It isn't really a big deal I agree but we can't control what stresses us out unfortunately, I can sympathize with OP for sure

What kind of unprofessional dentist carries out procedures where the other patients can see it? Write a letter of complaint, detailing how it made you feel, and why they should change this - it might make you feel better if you get an apology; an admission that this wasn't your fault at all.

I would be grossed out by that and I'm a 40 year old, chubby male!
