If I'm trying to get N from D, what web browser/email service should I be using to contact D?

Use the same email provider D uses. Or another privacy oriented email provider. Just avoid the likes of gmail, outlook/microsoft etc.

You can do it via the onion browser or use a vpn from the likes of Brave browser.

If you want to learn for on private communications you can search info on "opsec when using the net" although opsec is term usually used in relation to dark web browsing. Opsec is an abbreviation for operational security.
