Method Gas oven or stove

I may be moving in to a place that has an actual gas oven and stove- no idea how old they are, but is the usual method of ctbing with gas even possible with modern appliances and how would one exactly go about it? How do I prevent damage to anyone who responds or keep it from hurting other people?

The 'head in the oven' thing doesn't really work.
In Europe it did in the past because Carbon Monoxide was in the gas mix, in the 50s - 60s, I think. Long past, and the mercaptans in the current mix will make you sick and vomit before any harm is done
