The whole system's designed to extract value from human attention and misery. Social media companies literally hire neuroscientists to make their products more addictive, then act surprised when people can't focus anymore. We need governmental intervention in a unified global front

Trouble is, governments are made up of individual people. Do you have many MP's who haven't come from wealth? Why would these people want to tear down the system that benefits and sustains them?

I'd like to think our governments were about the good of the people. I'm sure one or two MP's out there genuinely are. An awful lot seem more intent on feathering their own nests it seems to me though- with all the scandals we hear about.

I used to wonder why someone would even want that job/ responsibility. Imagine having to make decisions that affect millions? But then, I read somewhere that it can be a path into big corperate jobs- CEO's etc. where they will make their real money. It's depressing to consider that ruling the country is maybe just a rung on the ladder up to personal riches.

I'm not convinced that communism or socialism are better alternatives either. At least, not in the way they have actually mannifested so far in the world. It would of course be nice if they did what they said on the tin. But, do you really think equality when you think of the Russian Soviet Union or China?

You're hitting on my kind of thinking! At least some of my thinking sessions anyway! The truth is politicians come in all varieties, good, bad, ugly. But you definitely hit the nail on the head with the ugly!!

But yes, unfortunately history hash shown that between capitalism, socialism and communism, capitalism seems to at least often be the lesser of 3 evils. The problem is we're now in late stage capitalism and imo it's about to explode in our faces.

While capitalism has its place, it's now gotten too big for it's boots. The only hope I see now is that world leaders get together, set aside all our differences, and cooperate to curtail capitalism's ugly side.

What is "late stage capitalism"? I've never quite understood this term. What do you propose takes its place?

From what I know it refers to a stage of capitalism where things are worse for the workers(hazards, income) and more is concentrated at the top with little opportunities for social mobility. Apparently the term originated during the 1930s and was coined by a German Marxist. I've heard of the term being used more often since 2022

But haven't working conditions & regulations actually improved over time? I'm not sure how that term would be applicable in today's world. As for more wealth being concentrated at the top, I'm not sure how much evidence there is for that or why that would even be an intrinsic negative. It stands to reason that corporate executives and business owners are of course going to generate higher levels of personal income than someone on a lower rung of the ladder.
