Are you restricted federally or only in your local state? What part of the 4473 restricts you?

Sorry for the tardy reply!!
I purchased a firearm with intent toCTB but was involuntarily hospitalized.
"Have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?"

would you happen to know if that applies to people who were voluntarily hospitalized? my plan is to buy a shotgun but I've willingly been in a psych ward twice. the Internet won't give me an answer on whether that means I can buy one or not!

Were you served papers saying you are restricted? I was, though I don't know if being served papers or not actually determines anything. Unfortunately I cannot give an accurate and helpful answer to your question :(
If u weren't served papers my guess is that you aren't restricted. Also, people go to those places for lots of reasons so if you're able to think of a reason that wasn't your actual reason you could tell a half truth (say yes and then if questioned say why).
Again, I am not very well versed in this subject matter so truth be told I don't know what the right course of action for you would be.
Hoping that somebody with knowledge on the subject can give their 2 cents (or more)

I think you're going to have to get lucky and find someone who "looks the other way" in order to obtain a firearm, like from a private individual seller. If you lie on the background check trying to buy from a registered dealer, you stand a good likelihood of prosecution.

You can read this too:

https://www.atf.gov/file/83751/down...t of a,for other reasons such as for drug use.

Yes, you can buy one. As long as it was voluntary youre fine. I bought one after being hospitalized, hospitalized myself again and returned it after I got out, then hospitalized myself again and got out a few weeks ago. Going to buy another shotgun tomorrow.

oh okay I wasn't served papers, so I hope that means I'm good! shotgun is the only method I'm comfortable with so that'll suck if I can't get one
I'm really sorry you aren't able to buy one though. I hope you're able to find your way around the rules! involuntary hospitalization is such a pain in the ass.

God it's gonna be such a pain in the ass to do that. Might as well just buy a god damn 3D printer. There's no way in hell I can, with ease, find someone in my area. Long story short i have difficult living situation to allow me to just drive somewhere northern in my state to find people who care less about the law. Land of the free my ass when they can strip you of your second ammendment just because you got forcedi nto a mental institution . altho it makes sense in my scanrio so many other peopl it dosnt
PS sory for tpyos but i start to no care how i write on this site so it doesnt look as similar to my regular writing, tho ultimately i do not care

thank goodness, there's no other method that's as quick and foolproof as shotgun so that would've sucked to have to think of a different way to go out. I knew it'd come in handy signing the voluntary papers at the hospital even though I didn't want to be there lol

It all depends by state and county (if you're in the us). I've worked in government and know for a fact that my home state and a neighboring one will not share information like that with each other if say, one moves from one state to another. To my knowledge, there's no way to find out if you're on that list without trying/failing to buy a gun, and you won't be able to purchase one in another state either.

Only options in the US for that situation are gun range or long barreled shotgun/rifle if you really wanna shoot yourself.

I'm in a similar bind. I was 5150-ied (20 years ago and in another state) after a failed attempt but that seems to have put me on some federal psycho list. I tried to buy a gun for the first time last summer. They ran a background check and I was denied, some form printed out that they handed me with a sorry look. I'm trying to work up the motivation to drive a long ass way to a gun show to get a 45 and end things for myself.
