so i noticed on here many ppl fear becoming a vegetable. this may be a stupid question but im wondering what are your main fears of becoming a vegetable? i would definitely prefer successful ctb above anything else, but becoming a vegetable would solve my main problem. if i am not conscious of myself or my surroundings, i can not have intrusive thoughts. or any bad thoughts at all. the only thing i would dislike is further burdening my family.

For me, I just don't want people to have to take care of me. I'd still be "alive" (even if I am not aware of my predicament), but I'd rather just move on to whatever comes after death.

I believe much of the fear surrounding becoming a vegetable is the possibility of losing almost all function, yet retaining consciousness. I fear finding myself in such a state because I could no longer take matters into my own hands, even just to finish what I started.

No one can no for certain how much someone in a vegetative state actually is aware. Like you said, there may be some consciousness of self or surroundings. that would suck. I wouldn't be able to remove myself from that. That's a little scary. Failure of ctb is a real concern. It's one of those things where it's best to "right" the first time.

I think the fear is more about being conscious but not being able to communicate and being treated like a vegetable. If I'm unconscious and in a coma I don't care. It's losing all or most of your function while remaining conscious and suffering that's the fear.

My fear is not so much a vegetative state, but more of the fear to be trapped in my own body and not be able to do anything but still be conscious. It's called locked in syndrome. You are stuck in your own body and can't do anything but blink and think while you are kept alive on life support for the next 10 or 20 years.

I've thought about this and actually there is a case in England. As long as you can communicte, even if it's only by blinking. You can refuse food and water. Legally they cannot make you have it. So while it would be a suck way to go, there's a way to get out of it.

It just sounds horrifying to me, being trapped in this world with nothing that I can do about it. No one should have to resort to risky methods in the first place, we all deserve the option of a peaceful exit at a time of our own choosing. It is so cruel how people in a vegetative state are denied the option of euthanasia, no one should have to live such a low quality of life.

One of the reasons why I think about ctb is because I feel like a burden to those around me. Entering a vegetative state would be my worse nightmare.

That would be hell, that's what I worry about.

I'd feel a lot better about becoming a vegetable if I had written a living will beforehand, which specified if I ever became a vegetable to withdraw life support. Not sure if that's actually allowed in all countries though.

I probably wouldn't care as long as I didnt end up recovering. I probably wouldn't remember it.

If you are afraid of this I would google what your country's medical system does in these situations. I did for mine. Turns out very few people are left on life support for years and years here and those are mostly in private hospitals where the family are willing to pay on the hopes of the person waking up one day.

This when left on life support for years tends to happen in countries with a lot of medical litigation like in the US where doctors are terrified of being sued.
