  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

Sometimes I just don't want to say a word such as "killing myself" or "suicide", even when in private, but especially in public for obvious reasons - sometimes I talk about it using a euphemism. "Catching the bus" is a euphemism itself, but do you have any other clever euphemisms for the act itself? I know there are ones like "buying the farm" or "kicking the bucket" but those are for any death - I sometimes refer to it as "doing the deed", are there any other ways you refer to it?

I like the idea of finishing a book. Refering life as a book you ended reading. No one suspects of it because of how normal reading is. Now, depending on the context you can say: "im close to finish reading my book" or "I'm thinking of end that one book i was reading" rephrasing the sentence but you get the point.

Tossing out the meat is past the expiration point.

Cross over to the next world.

Calling it a life.

Ending this story.

Releasing oneself ("The Giver" inspired).

I like to say that I will "fade away", or talk about "the world fading to black" (greyout), or if I'm being wordy "my consciousness [or soul] escaping from a dream and into the ether"

I like the idea of finishing a book. Refering life as a book you ended reading.

I like this, it conjures up an image of the "book of ages" recording everything that happens in our life, finally closing on the last page of the final chapter.

I like those ones: " time to go" or "time to leave".
I find it sounds simple and gentle.
Or "gotta go".

Couldn't agree more, OP. I just like to call it "Opting-out", as it really is opting out of a very raw deal. "Self Determination" is another good one.

Heh I recall I had a suicidal classmate who I rarely spoke to. We didn't get along well with each other but sometimes we discussed about suicide, depression, loneliness, you know casual teenager stuff. He was obsessed with the Netherlands, or their social politics to be exact. He liked the fact you smoke weed and liberal euthanasia law. He created a term 'train to Amsterdam', which I like and use even today.

Not really favourites, but (bad) ideas for some euphemisms:

D/C'd (Disconnected).
Leaving the theatre.
Taking the train.
Taking the express elevator.
Left the party early.
Signing off.
Clocking out.
Sleeping on a slab.
Giving life the slip (or pinkslip?)
Kiss the bullet.

Euphemisms that already exist:

Commit neckrope.
Self-terminate.
Went to sleep - can sometimes refer to euthanasia.
Offing yourself - not sure if this is a euphemism or not?

I love it too. I occasionally refer to suicide as выпил, which also can be literally translated to English as drank (past tense of "drink").
