TW: diets, food, weight, don't read if you're trying to avoid this

Anyways, I agreed to do a 10 day fast as a bet with a beneficial monetary reward and fuck this shit is hell. Never again will I put my body through this hell and I don't know why IF is so popular.

I lost a lot of weight at 16 because I would fast for long periods and then give up and binge right after + I started walking like a maniac everyday but the problem is I gained everything back because I didn't learn how to actually eat healthy when I wasn't fasting.

I'm exhausted and have no energy to do anything other than scroll and talk shit on this site, I can't think, my head is pounding, and I can feel my stomach acid rising up to attack my chest every minute and I have to chug water as a temporary fix for it.

This better be worth it.

It's because fasting is meant to be a sacrifice because of how hard it is on one's body~ That's why many Christians fast for the sake of God~ It also tends to teach self-control because most people (excluding me~ :/) find pleasure in eating food~ It is unfortunate that you never really learned how to eat in proper amounts tho~ :( Anyways, I wish you the best, and I hope your bet pays off well! :)

I'll never fast for a whole day; but, on some days, I'll intermittently fast and skip one or sometimes two meals a day. That, and a better diet has helped me lose 80 lbs / 36 kg. 🙂

I used to water fast like crazy a few years ago . unfortunately you lose a lot of muscle mass during long fasts which is extremely counter productive.muscle increases metabolism so we're kind of sabotaging ourselves in the long run.

Nowadays I do protein sparing modified fasting.down a few whey shakes and a salad lol.

I agree. I think fasting would just make me liable to want to binge. Plus, I remember reading that our bodies don't realise what we're doing. They genuinely think we may be at risk of starving to death so- once food is available again, they may be triggering a binge response. I just think any extremes around eating opens the doors for eating disorders to take hold. Maybe others have stronger wills/ a better relationship with food than me.

Before humans settled and stopped wandering around there wasn't always enough food 3x a day and that's why our bodies create a stock for those times when we don't have enough food available. In the modern world there's an oversupply of food all the time => we add weight and we don't wander around to burn the calories anymore.

Fasting is mainly a religious idea to control people. Certainly, there are benefits in fasting but we have to do it the right way - starving and then binging isn't gonna work and it's not healthy.

Is it a full fast, water only?

I've done a couple of those that some people consider dangerously long (40 days the longest). Chugging water is a bad idea. It could, and likely will if you chugged a lot quickly, flush out your electrolytes, which could lead to all sorts of issues in the absence of food to replace them, like the headaches you mentioned. You might need to supplement electrolytes (with no added sugar!) if that has happened. Or if you're only a couple days in it might just be the annoying transition period into ketosis.

The key for water fasts is to drink the water slowly and consistently. I aim for 3-4L per day, but no more than 500mL in any single hour, or 50mL in any single minute, so it's more like constantly sipping all day than intermittent chugs, trying to balance staying hydrated enough while keeping electrolytes in check. Once your body has switched to ketones to fuel the brain (3-5 days in) and if your electrolytes haven't been flushed out, I find it's a nice mental state to be in. Very calming. No more hunger.

Good luck with the fast. It should get better not worse hopefully!

IF is supposed to be pretty effective for weight loss and boosting autophagy, and I do it sort of automatically given my default eating pattern. But I wouldn't do a 10 day fast. You have to be super careful about reintroducing food and you may also risk refeeding syndrome. Not worth it, even for money.

i feel for most people (if they want to improve their health in general) it's better to try and eat healthier food (that comes from healthier origins; usually more local produced stuff or just less processed foods).

not dunking on people knowingly fasting for any particular purpose (like people going "i think i'm eating this thing too much, I'll try not to eat it" is perfectly valid), but i just don't think for the common person trying to improve their health, that going "alright less food time" is the most optimal first line response. it doesn't have to be "eat unhealthy food or don't eat at all", there're more options. best wishes of health to the person reading this. <3.

Was it a hunger strike? The bloating and hair loss are no joke and both happen immediately lol. Maybe less so when you're young
