I read that most attempts fail. Am not sure what research was done though. My own quality of life would drop significantly if I have a failed attempt. Am looking at SN or Hanging. Either way, it is a real worry. So am here asking for insight. Do people here believe most attempts fail? And a related question is why do attempts fail . does it just come down to the specifics on the day, or more feeling unable to go through with it at the critical moment?

I'd say that about 70 to 80 percent of attempts fail ... and it cen be for a majority of reasons.

Studies say that 95% of attempts fail. But I honestly believe most of these are attempts that were never going to succeed in the first place. Like slashing wrists, OD on Tylenol and such

i feel like most attempts fail. people who attempt (and fail) do not reach out; they just move on and then try again later. no one would publicly admit that they are struggling, out of fear of ostracism. i read somewhere that 70% of people who tried once never try again. that doesn't seem very credible, though.

And a related question is why do attempts fail
bodies are different; some succumb or give in faster than others. i guess the best example is overdose: your liver may be fine and recover; while another person's may not -- at least that's what i think.

Yes, most attempts fail.
Most often because it's a "spur of the moment" thing for those without gun access. Meaning they didn't plan for it and thus didn't do risk assesment.
Once you start planning, researching and realising how hard it actually is to succeed, it seems nearly impossible. That doesn't mean it is impossible, of course, just that it requires a lot more than people think.
Then of course, some fail anyway. Often because survival instinct kicks in and makes them do something to get saved. For instance, turning in mid air, so they land on their feet.

Thanks so much for the responses. I admit to hoping that people here would hold the opposite view, hit me with some other stats, that sort of thing. But it didn't happen and this is not surprising, I guess. The vast majority of attempts do fail. So maybe my plans need to include something for if it fails for me too. Difficult.

Thanks for this. Can you say anything more about the reasons? I really, really, do not want to fail.

Thanks for this. I wonder what research is done. Where the figure comes from. 70% never try again. Try again within a five year period? 70% of people tracked by who? It always seems so vague. Here and elsewhere multiple attempts don't seem uncommon.

My guess is that there are two main reasons people "fail":
-the method is lethal, but it gives you enough time to back out: partial, exit bag, all brain hypoxia methods are lethal if done correctly, but also reversible and need a lot of time to act if compared to SN, GSW;
-the method has a low success rate a priori: OD without knowing what are you taking, how much, cutting your wrists, etc.
