In reality, evolution is a mindless, plan-free phenomenon, driven into endless possibilities by random mutations, the most successful of which win out. humans evolved from monkeys just looking at how stupid humanity is it's not surprising, i am surrounded by idiots and because of this fact this place couldn't be anything but a shithole, a shithole because i am surrounded by what seems to be the most dumbest species to of ever of existed the vast majority of humanity is as dumb as shit most don't even want to understand how their own minds works let alone how technology and science work which is mostly mathematics we are made dumb born dumb and we stay dumb until the day we die the human speices is pointless the only thing going for it is we may build better machines with super intelligence this whole human endeavour is destined for extinction anyway the fittest species takes the earth for themselves and we are in the process of creating that species AI machines this place is the most dumbest place you will ever have the misfortune of coming alive in so long as the human beings are in charge of this shitshow How can people this totally stupid continue to exist?

I think trying to infer any meaning in life is a personal thing.

There are all sorts of theories but we will never know.

For me, I have had some great times. Just trying to make the most of life, to grow and understand things. Then there are darker times when depression hits and we feel all life is pointless.

I also get there are sadly people who have never had happiness at all and that's a terrible place to be.

The only thing you can 100% guarantee is the human race will never agree, we each have to find our own meaning.

Depends what you're comparing us to I guess. I'd say there are some pretty clever humans out there. Pretty impressive to be able to go to the moon or explore miles beneath the ocean. At least we have the intelligence to know how limited we are. That hasn't really done us any favours though- considering how miserable it makes us! I actually think as a race, we've made incredible discoveries and created amazing inventions. Long-term of course- we've shot ourselves in the foot. I'd say most organisms on this planet are basically selfish. We have the benefit of realising that we're destroying the planet but- we carry on regardless. So yeah, long-term, I think we're f*cked.

We didn't evolve from monkeys. We share a common ancestor with them...

I think you would like this quote. "What makes me depressed? Seeing stupid people happy". - Slavoj Zizek. Honestly, whenever I see my peers on Instagram living their best lives, it makes me sad (and mad). I know that it's all for show, but it still makes me envious...they say that jealousy is a green-eyed monster, and I think it's true.

The more aware a person Is of reality the more depressed they are. It does seem stupid people are happier

I relate to what you mean. Evolution isn't survival of the fittest, its only survival of whoever can exchange genetic information the most...

At my university, I am so surprised by the number of fools around me (no offense to them). In a way you could pity them; I'd give away my moderate intelligence just for mindless happiness.

Also my first comment, woo! :)

There's this nightmare scenario for AI people invented to describe AI going horribly wrong called a "paperclip maximizer". The idea is, if you mess up the values with your AI, and your AI is really powerful, say if you wanted it to make paperclips, it takes it too literally and starts turning everything into paperclips and destroys you. It turns all tech into paperclips, it turns you and your family into paperclips, etc.

What is interesting is, no one in this world of people who are very concerned with AI safety, seems to realize that DNA is already exactly this kind of thing. DNA is uncontrollably creating more copies. You can't stop it. It's a mindless process, as you say, it's piloting us, it's making us miserable. It's the thing driving the lion to eat the gazelle right now. It's the thing driving the CEO to exploit everyone. It's the thing causing the war. It's the reason why you can't find love(those you want, you are not good enough for. Those who want you, are not good enough for you). It's a fundamental problem because it does not care about right or wrong, nor does it care about its host.

It only cares about 2 things: Survive, and make more copies. So the only hosts it rewards, are the hosts which share the values of the DNA. The "winners" of our world, wish to survive(not just survive, but have total control over the world so they can truly enforce their values, which are really just the values of DNA), and then just make more copies regardless of how bad things get. If things are hellish? Well, just make more copies-- maybe those things will be better at making more copies in a hellworld.

That is the game currently being played.

Personally, I think the world would be a much better place if dolphins had decided to take over, instead of monkeys!

Monkeys like to throw their own shit at each other… and we're still basically doing the same thing 1,000's of years later, only in a slightly more sophisticated manner! 😜

I don't think I've read something that so wonderfully explains it. Thank you, really.

You make me draw the connection to bacteria, and their viruses that kill bacteria via injection of their own DNA; you're right, all around us is this warfare of trying to get our DNA forward. From the largest most complex interaction of human beings, to the phage's hijacking of bacterium for further proliferation.

According to Darwin's Origin of Species, it is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.
Evolution is a mindless process but it is guided by environmental pressures, ect.
The next steps will be to master replacing mitochondria, and then reverse engineering what our original embryonic stem cells were and replicating them to replace defective cells in our bodies.
That will set the foundation for editing our own genomes as well as for immortality.
Very likely we will upload our consciousness, but an alternative is that we will keep embedding hardware in our bodies until our bodies are no longer dominated by biology.
Math is both invented and discovered – what it does is discovered, but proving that it does so (within its own framework) is invented along with the symbols.
Whether life has meaning is somewhat independent of whether it is important on a cosmic scale, and if machine intelligence only arises from biological intelligence, then biological intelligence will of that meeting even if it does not persist in the age of machine intelligence. I personally favor the merger scenario – our primate brain did not get rid of our mammalian brain, which didn't get rid of our reptilian brain, which in turn did not get rid of our chordate reflexes, which in turn did not get rid of our genetic intelligence in the individual cells, so why would we expect our electronic intelligence to get rid of our current intelligence rather than becoming another layer?
AI - An existential threat, partly because it is a tool that humans may use against each other.
Yes, AI is a risk to humanity. We should ensure that the first AI that is smarter than we are is raised by loving parents almost as if it were a human child. I worry about military AI, which would effectively be raised by a paranoid parent.
