The common census I've found is most people believe that they didn't chose life. I for one, do not remember wanting to ever exist. Doesn't mean it didn't happen.

If you mean spiritually, to come here to learn, then it's possible. I'm not sure though. I can't remember deciding to do so, so I am undecided. Maybe we're just born, and that's that. Maybe in the astral realm(or whatever), someone forces us to come here to 'school', like parents force their children to do in this life.

I've given this much thought. I am perplexed by the possibilities.

How would you even choose to do so? Whom would you tell: "I want to exist now"? So you'd actually already have to exist to chose to exist. lol

I think consciousness is a random byproduct of the universe and nobody can really decide to have it. At least I hope so...

Good question & thoughts. I see it as everything that exists is/is from the universe... like energy without consciousness, yet choosing to be a physical, fleshly being somehow.

If there is a brain, there must be consciousness. Consciousness in the way we prefer to precieve it is defined by the ability to comprehend existance.
Mild AI for example is just as "conscious" as us, its just that it's proccesing capabilities are unimaginably low. It experiences the world on a completely different level, having completely different methods of controling and observing the outside and inside environments. It "sees" the world through lines of codes, on a 2 dimentional plane of existance. Same principle goes for plantlife, microorganism, e.t.c.
Trying to comprehend other organisms' consciousness is just as impossible as comprehending the volume of space. How can I understand something I am physically unable to imagine, nor ever seen or felt.

I dont think "we" chose anything, "we" were destined to "appear" from the moment the brain started to obtain its primary functions (Since consciousness is the sum of such functions), and likewise "we" will cease to exist once those functions are no longer online.

Hope this contributes to the discussion

I'm not sure about initially choosing to exist. But I suppose anyone that is still alive is choosing to continue to exist.

I believe that each one of us reencarnate in whatever they want and they chose they future. Some people can call me dumb but those are my beliefs. The only thing you cant decide before reborning is how hard will be your path until you achieve what you want in this life. I hope you are doing okay and are having a good day. Also, sorry for my broken english

Why is it that some impossible to verify fantasy seems to be more popular than other impossible to verify fantasy? What if we are all really living on a small island that has been placed by a worker elf on a giant endless conveyor belt, where the laws of physics work perfectly within the island domain but outside the island domain we have no way of knowing what the 'laws' of reality are? Isn't that equally unverifiable? I suppose the answer is we place extra importance on fantasy that grants the possibility of life after death or eternal/extended existence of some form. To answer your question I don't think the concept of choice is meaningful before life. To make things even more complicated there are many physicists who believe the concept of choice is not even meaningful while alive, i.e. if you are a hard- determinist. This paints a pretty bleak picture of reality for those of us who 'chose' to suffer as we do.

If I had known the world was like this I certainly would not have chosen, even if I was guaranteed a decent life.
There is no better peace than nonexistence.

I'm not sure about initially choosing to exist. But I suppose anyone that is still alive is choosing to continue to exist.

not really, it is not easy to circumvent SI.
If we just had an off button, this forum would be empty.

Chemical and emotional delusion despite being a total lie, seems to be the only way sapient beings are able to exist for considerable periods of time.

I heard that "earth is a school" theory for years. My problem with it is that if I chose to come here, then why would I willingly put myself in a situation I couldn't get out of like health problems or poverty? Why would I choose a life that I didn't have a chance to succeed in? That's the thing, I wouldn't.

I've heard that kind of garbage for years after I gave up Christianity, and it sounds like some bs. Who would sign up for a place like this knowing what to expect? If we came here from the Astral Realm I'm convinced that we were tricked into coming here. There's no learning here. Just suffering with a few other things to distract people and make people feel it isn't that bad. I'm convinced this place isn't a school, it's hell.

Exactly. Although maybe we learn to suffer in silence or something. It seems much more like punishment to me. Or maybe it's to learn empathy? I've learned that a long time ago. It seems pointless.

I sometimes wonder if maybe I actually did choose this life and think about why I would have chosen it. Also if I did choose it, how much did I know before making the choice? Maybe I overestimated my ability to cope with things, or maybe I knew that I would ctb but went for it anyway.

Interesting thought

I think it's a trap we set for ourselves. We reincarnate to try to get something good. It's an endless loop unless we can really grasp the futility of it. We think this time I will do things right. This time it will be better.

It's an addiction to gambling only we never win.

I just don't get what the end goal would be. I don't think I'd agree to do something. Especially something very difficult and/or risky without knowing what I was trying to achieve. So- are we told the meaning of life before we get here but then, somehow forget it?

Was I SO bored in the void that doing something seemed preferable to doing nothing? Again though- what was I told about life? What was the last time you made some absolutely colossal life change without finding out about it first?!!

It just seems unlikely to me that I would have been dumb enough to agree to life- unless there was a good reason for me to do so, OR they lied about what it really entailed.
