This was amazing to watch. Thank you.
I did not realize that people with assisted suicide cases in the US get a powder! and something to mix it with? (do you know what that is?) Looks like they get some type of AE + sedative as well (good). But this is so much more awkward and neglectful almost compared to the European videos where people get so much support it seems, in terms of people coming to their home with the products and actually helping them through it. This one employee in one of those videos was extremely gentle, loving and caring. Thats how I would want to go. Instead here you got a package with some instructions.. like here you go, Good Luck. Idk, feels cold. But still, I am glad its an option and hopefully it will be available in every state eventually.

EDIT: - WAITT A MIN.. wtf??? I just got to the end of the video where Gus has taken the medicine. Its 4 hours later and hes STILL ALIVE SNORING??? What do they give people here in the USA .. I wrongly assumed it was N.

Your welcome

They get the nembutal and a syrup to mix it, and he also had a bottle with anti emetics pills.

So yes he got nembutal and yes it can take hours before people die in cases. With him he also was on opioids for pain problems like most cancer patients. That does interfere with pentobarbital thats why it took almost 7 hours.

Also you are right about the support system and guidance with the American way of euthanasia. In the documentary you can see clearly how they let patients do it themselves without any guidance.
For some it can be fulfilling to do it that way. But here in Europe it is also because its not only for people with cancer also for dementia or ALS or mental issues.
That requires more research or else it will be seen as murder. So more rulls held by law for the whole process of the euthanasia

i did not appreciate the persistent pro-lifer manipulativeness that pervades the film.

Very touching documentary.
The interviewer could show more compassion though.

I love the Terry Pratchett documentary on Dignitas. Terry Pratchett understands. Louis Theroux didn't understand at all....

The thing is he always plays this roll of critic and asking why. Thats how he keep the conversation going.

I thought he was very biased and lacked empathy

He's an odd documentary maker. His comments and questions often have an air of insensitivity and/or naivety about them. They can almost sometimes be 'stupid' questions. But I think maybe that's also his strength; he kind of asks the kind of questions that many people might ask. I don't know if that's deliberate, and he's actually much more perceptive and sensitive than he seems, but I must admit that he can make me feel uncomfortable sometimes when he does it.

That said, he does choose fascinating subjects for his documentaries and they are always worth watching whatever one thinks of his manner.

I don't believe it had something to do with opioids because most opioids don't interact with GABA-receptors and Pento like all Barbiturates is such a GABA-drug and has nothing to do with opiod-receptors.
I know that Cannabinoids can increase the tolerance to GABA-drugs. That is why it is very important to say it before a anesthesia. And many cancer-patients have neuropathic pain because of cytostatics and for neuropathic pain they get Gapapentin or Pregabalin which can increase tolerance to GABA-drugs even if they don't interact with GABA but they have a inhibitory effect on NMDA receptors. And an inhibitory effect on NMDA receptors lower tolerance to opioids. There is even researches ongoing to use NMDA antagonists during pain medication with opioids to lower the risk for opioid-induced-hyperalgesia because this is often the risk factor for the development of an opioid-addiction.
One exception is Methadone. It has inhibitory effect on NMDA receptors but it is not strong enough to minimize risk of addiction.
In general many opioids increase the risk for a deadly respiratory paralysis - if taken with GABA-drugs.
